Another 2 hour mix...

no matter how much they suck or how boring the song...

The mix sounds great (as usual).
Gotta like getting drum sounds like that from 4 mics.

Song sounds like a Hootie throwaway...

Sonusman, your comments were/are innapropriate. If you did not think these guys were "good enough" to record in your studio the second you heard them strum the first note and hit the first beat on the drums, you should have stopped the session and sent them home, along with their money. But you didn't. And you took their money. You were hired by them to provide a service, that is, to record them. Period. Not to give the kind of critique you have given. You are out of line. At least these guys are trying.

The mix was good. I liked what you did with the drums. The vocals seemed a little up front for my tatse. The recording of the lead guitar part was good too. Not a bad song.

Isn't Ed allowed an opinion about the music at some point?

I think if he kept his feelings about the music to himself while he was actually working with the band, he did his job responsibly. After everyone's gone home, hey, the statute of limitations is up...

But expressing his opinion in the first post influenced a lot of people's hearing of it because people respect Ed's opinion. I don't think anyone kisses his ass however... :D

Queue,

I understood what you meant ...maybe I took a tangent? I like your system for listening to songs. I'll use it myself in the future.

It's impossible for someone here to know how the session went down. Sonusman was there and should know best but we are at a disadvantage to get a clear picture. My point was that I myself would not , I don't think, have posted this group as an example if I had negative feelings about their performance. Even if I were trying to show how a good mix could "fix" things, without the original raw tracks, listeners would have nothing to compare.

Well, we certainly have been known to take off on a tangent or two here...:D

Glad you liked the "Q system of mix reviews"

Now if I could only get my ears a little more "golden"...

queue,

I like your system alot too. It is very practical. FOr golden ears, listen to about an hour of songs everyday from totally different singers/producers. THe differences will start to become apparent.

I actually think that the vocal sound on this song is one of the best Ive heard here. Apart from shailats solidtube vocal, I cant think of another one I like better.

CJ,
Thanks for the compliment and thanks for the tip. Maybe someday, I'll feel that one of my recordings/mixes is even close to ready for the disection and analysis of this forum.

I'm up against lots of learning curves from start to end, all the way from songwriting, through musicianship, into recording technique and on up to mixing. I've got lots of time to learn, though, and lots of help through this BBS.
