we don't need rest!!
who can tell if the U87 is upside down or not (just by listening now...no peeking!!)

I Quickly Admit

Not me! But for certain applications, one way can be better than the other for pretty obivous reasons.

do many mics perform better upside down , or at least better for certain applications? like the nt1 , recording accoustic guitar i have it upside down (or is it?) and it sounds great , yet vocals i have it the other way ... would this be making much difference to the recorded sound?

I doubt it would make a difference, as refraction takes place before the diaphram.

I use the Nt-1 upsidedown sometimes. I dunno something just pulls mr into doing it that way. I sort of did a little "expeiment" mith this micing a bass cab with the NT-1. One night up, the next night tried it down- same position of mic and cab and setting on the amp- who knows how tempermental that 69 p-bass can be though ;)- not a good test for sure, but I liked it better upside down. Voodoo? Maybe....

I did this same test with an ex-girfriend once too :D one night up the next night down. She loved it both ways :D

well...the idea....basically dealing with older tube mics, and not necessarily the U87, is that after *warm up* the heat rises within the mic and "changes" the sound. Sure sounds like BS to me. I figure such a mic to be so unstable as that its reliabilty to be questionable, not to mention the general golden eared listening public we have now a days that "care" about such things.

The warm-up period is also very important to this technique with a girlfriend.
