Ethan, sorry for the delay, I maybe have one left here, let me check tomorrow:)

I also acquired an Ampex ATR-700

I also acquired an ATR-700 and would like any information I can get on the machine.
Like where I can get a free manual.

I found a manual. Someone was kind enough to email me it in pfd format. I have been loving this machine.

I have the manuals.

Speak up who wants one.

I'd like to have one for future reference. I'm keeping copies of things like this in case I ever obtain the gear or in case people stop sharing. PM me for my email.

FYI - The capstan motor is the same used on the Otari 5050 series of the same era. According to the late Ron Sundell, who modded my 25-2, those motors are no longer available and cannot be rebuilt.

I guess I'll get nothing and like it.

Hi

I've acquired an ATR-700 some time back (years actually) and am hoping to find a manual for it. Capstan spins but there is no response to the transport controls at all - hoping it's not a major problem - to the experts, is this a common symptom of a typical problem?

any advise is gratefully received

cheers, Phil

Have you loaded tape on it? The controls won't do anything unless the take up arm is held up either by hand or by a properly loaded tape.

Thanks for responding - yes, I loaded tape back when I first acquired it - I also tried again today while holding both tension arms - I just acquired a manual so now I'm ready to have a tech friend look at it - I'll try again this week, just in case I had the tape threaded wrong or perhaps I wasn't holding my tongue the right way...

I ditched all my tape machines a few years back and now I'm kicking myself for not keeping at least a half-track machine - hopefully, this one will come back to life

Phil

Thanks Rick - I'll do that - I hope it's an internal fuse, because the other stuff is outside of my abilities

here's a question - it's a cat. no. 4010272, meaning that it's fastest speed is 7.5 IPS - I'd really prefer 15 IPS - is it as simple as installing something like a sleeve over the capstan to double the circumference, thus doubling the tape speed or are there a bag of other considerations as well?

my kid (24 y.o.) could machine a dead accurate sleeve in his sleep if that's all it requires - recalibration needed obviously

this is all assuming I can get the unit working

thanks for any advice you can offer on modding it to 15 IPS

Phil

I think TASCAM, who made that machine for Ampex, used different a capstan motor for slow speed models but am not absolutely certain. New motors have not been made in over a decade for that machine. You will need to find a good 15IPS motor from one of the following: another ATR-700, TASCAM 7300, or 25-2. The Otari 5050 2 tracks supposedly also used the same motor. The Tascam 35-2 may have as well.

so I threaded up some tape correctly and checked the internal fuses - Visually only, mind you, they're soldered in place and I didn't have a meter - I'll check again when I have my meter with me to see if there's juice at the fuses - anyway, no action from the transport buttons - I also found the counter belt had turned into molten liquorice - what a mess

incidentally, all the lights come on and the edit button engages the the pinch roller - I read another post about a card-edge connector on the transport card which likes to be cleaned occasion all or it won't co-operate - I'll check that too

Phil
