I ahave an Ampex 601 tape recorder converted to mic preamp as is commonly done. My problem is it slightly distorts and does not have an acceptable output. Even if I push it till the meter on the Ampex is almost in the red, on my 24 track the signal is a bit low. I cant get the 24 track to peek. Im mainly concerned about the distortion. The guy that does a lot of racking for me is not familiar with the Ampex and up front says for me get get him some more info. He is very good,has done some fantastic racking of Telefunken,Urei, BFE. preamps. Any clues?? He is thinking it may have something to do with the fact that this was a tape recorder. Somwething about needing heads?? or bias??? Any help great,Jim
