Apparently, Uli, kind of thought well of this concept. (see pic :D )
Isn't that the Beri unit with the inactive valve with LED backlighting? ;)

<off-topic>
Seriously, you want vintage, I've just inherited vintage - an Ekco SW86 radio, circa 1936 - from a great aunt who died last year. Might be an even larger project than the Ferrograph....maybe I should finish that one first... :o :)

hah hah
"LED backlighting" is Uli's own (and maybe the only Uli's own ;) ) real invention in the realm of blending new and old technology (or technology, period) which takes it to the whole new dimension.... Such invention has natural protection bilt-in within its core and thus nobody on earth would ever want to infringe on its sovereignty. Uli is a smart guy! :D  :D

So could I actually make a decent recording with just the preamps in this board? I am waiting to buy a nicer preamp when I have the money, but of course I want to start recording something. Thanks again. :)

I played around with A&H pre-amps and pitted them against my higher end to high end stuff. The most identicle sound was from my DMP3.

The A&H sound excactly like the DMP3 ( at least the A&H 32 channel board I have)

That is all I can say as the higher end pre-amps sounded way different.

Tha A&H pre-amps also stack quite well with no crappy artifacts that I can hear.

That gives me a better idea of what is in that board.
Based on delivery of a subjective "analysis" of an assumingly once actually occurred pitting game with undisclosed "higher ends" and assumingly you have and know well one or couple of these - YES! or ..maybe?.

How exactly do you use just a preamp from a board or channel strip by itself?
What powers it?

I will disclose them assuming you were commenting on my post.

Avalon M5
Focusrite Reds
Joe Meek VC
Neve 1073
DMP3
API lunchbox

I think that is it. The Allen&Heath pre-amps sound the same as the DMP3 in my recordings. The others cost and sound way different. A&H pres are totally useable and I would (and don't) hesitate to use them exclusively.

Direct outs will do it.

To bypass the in-board pre-amps, then use the insert jack with an insert cable.

OPh, I forgot, I have a DMP3 left here from a band that was a tad short on payment. I would have normally given it away to my local school for their music dept, but I do like the sound of it on some instruments like elec guitar, snare drums (like the treble snappy kind) and bass like it too.

It is fairly good and does'nt stack up crazy like many other cost-effective pres.

take it away - give it away
Those colors don't match. (when residing within a one single entity, that is)
.....
but wait a minute!...: Once upon a time there was a fake phony fraud somewhere out there in the woods (according to the myth, of course).
