Hello everybody,
I am looking for a simple interface in order to be able to record 4-6 tracks at a time and mixdown them later. I am working in classical music and I will need it to have some good-sounding demos for the group in which I play in.

I've been using for sometime a Edirol R-09 machine, which I consider to be a very nice object, but since I'm in a group playing on ancient instruments, some voices need some extra "pumping", and so using a single audio pair will not suit.

Moreover, I prefer to mix using loudspeakers (and not headphones) and - since I will be also playing in all these recordings - I need to place down mics, do a few regulations and then sit down and play, leaving somebody in front of the console pressing "RECORD-STOP" (ideally, my dog :-)...).

My questions are very simple:
1. If I do the recording via the Alesis MM 8 usb2/firewire using a multitrack software for HDR will I be able to mix the tracks later?
2. I have found a secondhand firewire version at a very budget price, so I'd buy this one instead of the USB2, but... do I need some specific gear on the PC? I have a s400 port (which I've never used), will it be enough?

Sorry for the possibly dumb questions, but I'm not very expert in HDR and I've never used a firewire device.

Thank you to everybody,

Schroeder

1. Yes. Absolutely.

2. All you need is a firewire port, sounds like you're good to go.

I have one of the USB models and use it quite a bit for quick and dirty rehearsal recordings to the laptop. It's a snap to set up when we're playing acoustics on the back porch. :D I've been very happy using it with both Audition and Reaper.

Better off with USB

You would be much better off going the USB 2.0 route, they have dropped the Firewire line and won't be doing anything with it, to them it's a dead thing. And a lot of people are stuck now with mixers they can't use. You can get the same multi-channel recoding ability with the USB 2.0 now, at least according to Alesis, but be very careful of the driver issues, they aren't doing so well moving into the 64 bit W7 arena, but will hopefully keep working on the USB line in years to come. If you really want the Firewire I would seriously suggest you buy a different brand, one with actual customer service support.
