Alesis M1Active 620 Question

Noob here...

I am interested in getting a pair of these monitors. Are they good quality monitors? Has anyone had any problems, or had to replace them? I've searched the forums and web retailers for negative feedback and haven't found any. Would I get many years of use out of them?

i have the 620's, and to be honest, i'm not that thrilled

they seem to be about the best thing in that price range, but the sound is really hyped in the low and high end...while everything sounds great coming out of them, i find that my mixes don't translate very well at all, especially to cars and boomboxes and the like

i would personally save up a few bucks and step up to something a little nicer if i was going to do things all over again

That's the price range that I can afford. Would they be better if a sub was added and the highs were cut some?

What would you recommend checking out for a few more bucks?
 
i doubt you would need a sub; the low end sounds fine

i've just found that mixes that seem to have a lot of punch and clarity on my 620's don't consistently sound good on other playback systems...i played a mix of mine that sounded killer on a friend's event 20/20's, and it sounded like the band was playing in a cardboard box

You sure it's not a bass node problem with your room?

i'm sure that's part of the problem, but it's the midrange that really sounds terrible...the guitars and particularly the snare just flat-out sounded like ass on those events

but who knows, maybe these monitors would translate much better if i got some bass traps on the wall
 
I picked up these monitors today. They sound great. They're a lot clearer than my previous monitors. I hope to get some years of good use out of them.

What is the best gain setting for these, or any active monitors?

set them at number 8 on each speaker - that's more than loud enough with a little room to spare
 
i guess it'll depend on the strength of the signal going in, but i only have to set mine to the 3rd mark on the dial...even with the gain this low, when i turn up my C/R output about 1/2 way it makes the walls rumble w/ no clipping
 
Thanks for the replies. I set the gain to 5. I don't have a large room, so this sounds good for now. This will probably change after I get accustomed to these monitors.

Here's another question....

I've searched forums and the web and cannot find any info. I see that active monitors from Adam, Dynaudio, JBL, etc., have heatsinks on the rear, and Mackies have open ventilation. How do others like the Alesis, M-Audio and KRK stay cool after extended periods of use? Will the life expectancy shorten for these brands or is there a difference in performance due to heat?

Sweet as mate

I test 6 diferent pairs in my studio at the same time and I kept 620! I did invest a lot of the time and the money in insolating my control room and I have a friend who own the shop. Got to test it in my space and got the discount as well as 6 pack burbon-coke ;-) my mixes are very good and I found these very transparent. I can tell that they won't sound as good in the room with a bad insolating aspecially in the low frequencies. In my studio they worked better than KRK's which is much more expensive as well as Mackie's which come across very muddy in mids and give me a headiche! Good job Alesis I didn't regret what so ever.
