I'm thinking of buying the iO2 Express but there's one thing I'm not sure of. The web site says, "Record up to 24-bit, 48 kHz audio into virtually any software". But I've heard that it does 48 kHz only, and not 44.1 kHz. Is this correct?

I found a few references to people who had their recordings playing back at the wrong rate/pitch.
This was a result of sample rate mismatch, which would suggest that it's adjustable.

I also found a product spec list on a retailers website. It said "sample rate adjustable up to 48k.

Hope that helps.

I can't give you any guarantee, but I suspect so.
Maybe hold out for 1st hand experience here, just incase?

Good suggestion, thanks. I'll keep an eye out while shopping around. The M-Audio M-Track 2 looks like it's what the Alesis unit was cloned from, so that might be in the running, too. I like the look of the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 but it doesn't have MIDI in/out, which would at least free up one of my dwindling USB ports. It does look like a much more solid unit, though. The 2i4 does have MIDI in/out but is more than I need. And costs more. Isn't that always the way...?
