Check out the Mackie *SDR*. The MDR is discontinued, and the HDR is too expensive (but adds visual editing). Street price for the SDR these days is about $1300., and you can get a cheap adapter that lets you pull the hard disk right out of the SDR and put it into your computer. The SDR uses a FAT file system, unlike the Alesis. You can also use cheap IDE drives with the SDR (I think you can do that with the Alesis as well. The SDR gives you 24 tracks at 48 kHz, but you can also choose to use 12 tracks at 96 kHz instead.
