The D112 is good on kick, although it has a characteristic sound that some people love and some people don't. It is really good on standup bass, which is what it was designed for. It is also a surprisingly good mic for voiceovers and even some vocalists. Once you get past the idea that it is a "kick drum mic", you'll find it's just a pretty good dynamic mic.-Richie

When I hear people down this mic for kick, for the life of me, I don't know what they're talking about. I've used them side by side with all the "usual suspects" many, many times. I guarantee that the kick drum itself has WAY more to do with its recordability than any mic does. Garbage in, garbage out.

For sure, but I myself never really got into the d112 thing. As you said though, the drum and the drummer make WAY more difference than the mic.

Myself, I like the e602 or the ND 868 for <$200. Otherwise, an SM7!

Read the post again. I said some people like it and some people don't. If you want that sound, which is a classic, there are no "better" mics. There are a list of what Track Rat calls "the ususal suspects" that might be better for some specific application, or which some folks will just prefer, as a matter of taste. These include EV RE20, Audix D6, and Shure SM7B, among others. In my experience, the people who hate the D112 often like the D6 and vice versa. Experienced (older) engineers often favor the discontinued AKG D12. Many people use one of the dynamics above in conjunction with a condenser backed off a bit. My main point was that the D112 is often overlooked as an all-purpose large diaphragm dynamic, and gets pigeonholed as a kick mic.-Richie

I wonder if the beta52 could be used as the d112 could be according to you, Richard. I tried to sing into one one time and it just seems the frequency response on the beta52 doesn't really allow for it to be used on anything else. To me, that on'es just a striaght forward kick mic. I didn't spend much time with it, but has anyone used either the d112 (besides Richard) or beta52 on anything else besides bass and kick?

paid $130ish on the bay for mine last year. nice kick mic. i dont like the beta as much, but thats just how it is on my bass drum. i have acrylic drums so i'd say what applys to mine might not apply to wood sets.

I've used D-112's on vocals, and most notably, on guitar cabs with great results.

I like the D112 on bass, and on guitar. On guitar it has a kind of ribbon like bottom end.
It is good on kick too, but I usually won't use it on any other instrument if I do decide to use it on the kick to prevent frequency buildup on the natural curve of the D112.
