Hi to All,,
Wanted to get a reel to reel for some time now to pay all the band tapes I still have from my much younger days. My wife and son found a AKAI X5000W at Goodwill for a ridiculous low price and picked it up. It is in really nice shape but I don't believe it's been used for a very long time. The heads are in good shape the capstan wheel is good ,the capstan shaft has some scratches but not terrible. all the functions FF REW/ and speeds seem to work. I do have a couple of questions that I hope someone may be able to answer.
The only thing I found a little odd is when you turn the unit on both VU meters pegged for a second which I would expect. The right goes down immediately to 0 the left goes down to about 1/3 of the scale right away and then goes down to 0 after being on for a minute or two.I have a feeling since it looks that the unit hasn't been used for a long time it might be a dirty contact somewhere.Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. So far I've only cleaned and demag the heads and capstan. I haven't put a tape on it yet as I'm not sure about the controls.
Would anyone have a owners manual for this or a similar model with the same features that they would be willing to scan to show me how the units controls works? I checked a couple of websites but could not find one.
Is this a decent unit? I only paid $12.00 for it so I won't be out a lot. Like I mentioned I hope to get this working so the kids can see dad was able to rock when he was much, much younger!
All the Best!

Thought I would post this here also. Also posted in the AKAI Forum.
