Gee, here I am in the mic forum. I don't often come here. It isn't cuz I don't like you, it's cuz I have all the mics I need for the time being... :D

Anyway, here's a copy of a post I put in the Cave, and I figure that this was an appropriate forum to post a clone in:

"I want to test the waters here - I want to find out what different people think about advertising your own personal project here on hr.com, whether it be an album or a microphone or a recording service. My motivation in this is to find out what most people think, and why they think so. I'll do a poll, and I'll respect the results, but I'm also interested in what people have to say about it. I'll put it in more than one forum."

Its the fact that there are no commercials on TV for most gear, that leads me to the realization that since there are only advertising copy on pages in magazines, with them being the only things on the websites, along with the specs. that advertising is a good thing as long as any questions asked about the products are answered honestly.

If the product is something Im not interested in, I can allways choose to not go to the thread, and resist commenting as to not disturb the harmony of the thread.

What I resent is someone chooseing what I can or cannot read for me. and costantly disturbing the thread with thier antispam politics that should have prompted them to skip said thread.

Darrin, you know it's not that simple. You don't know what's in a thread until you read it. If I had a spam filter on this browser, I could use that, but I don't, so I can't.

Anyway, am I right in thinking that you're talking about people advertising products, rather than pushing their CDs, their websites, or their recording/mastering services?

I ment advertising for anything, but what has evolved here in this forum is product oreinted. We dont need more action from a moderator, or any changes here based on a poll.

I do find being tricked into a thread by being baited only happens when Sonusman does it. Even then I get a chuckle, I suppose that if my connection was really slow that would be different.

I went with it depends.

I guess I missed the posts where Alan Hyatt was "kicked around" but read the thread entitled "you won't have Alan Hyatt to kick aroudn anymore."

Alan - from my reading was extremely helpfull and only spoke about his projects or his preamp when directly asked or when it directly related to the subject at hand. I saw no spam there and I wish he would still hang out here.

I have heard there have been other's who praised a dubious item only to find out they or someone they knew were selling one on e-bay. Thats unacceptable in that it's purpose is not to inform but to advertise and is dishonest at best (even if they really like the product).

So far in my year and a half here I have not personally been put off by any out of line advertising.

My humble 2 cents.

Chess, we do................it's those banner ads that keep showing up the top of the pages. You will also find ads in the "gear for sale" forum thingy.

It's also not an unknown fact that Dragon has ignored approaches from 2 or 3 well known members wanting to pay for banner advertising here................go figure.

So - nobody's too bothered by it... do I have that right?

As long as they aren't doing constant spamming like the Kaza bots I don't see what the BFD is. Is this some holy sanctuary or something?

Since most communication here is two way I think it's much more valuable then traditional advertising. Here we get to ask questions and call people on their BS if it's appropriate.

it sounds as if somebody has been complaining to you.

who is it?

we can deal with this ourselves!

:p

darrin is right as usual. everybody in this part of the forum wants to talk about specific brand names. to end all appearance of advertising would mean deleting all references to specific brand names. silly.

the mere mention of certain words or names can get some ppls' panties in an uproar! goofy.

maybe somebody is scared that they will unthinkingly go buy something that alan hyatt mentions and then will feel bad about it?

maybe they have bad dreams about kazaa taking over the world...

Dobro,

I don't believe there is just one answer to this,.......... but from looking at the poll results so far, I would say the majority have no problem with people who have a service or product which may be of direct benefit to others here, tactfully making others aware of that service or product.

By tactful, I mean posting a psuedo-advert just once in an appropriate forum.............no multiple posts, and no repeat posts. People keep refering to Ed's "spamming" the HR.com cd, but that to my knowledge, doesn't financially benefit himself, and the supposed profits are going to Dragon to help with HR running costs, so essentially Ed's posts were a non-issue.

The likes of Alan Hyatt, Blue Bear Sound, The Real Waldo, Harvey Gerst, Downside Studios and God knows how many other members here work within the industry................as others become aware of these members "industry ties", then advertising by them really isn't necessary anyway............their industry connections are automatically associated with their HR.com username. So what do we do............have these people "removed" from this site just because they are guilty of "advertising by association"? I HOPE NOT!!!

It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life...

An articulate response, and none of my warning flags went up, ausrock. The mic forum's cool. Now on to the mixing forum...

(thanks everyone)
