I am getting ready to use a pair of these as overheads for a drum kit. I haven't really used them yet, but someone over on the drum board said they sound like shit. I've heard some contrary opinions, and I know it's probably as much taste as anything, but anyone else use these before? Opinions?

I love mine. Use 'em as OH's and guitar mics.

Quite decent, maybe get the SC-2 which has filters and pads.

It was me who said they sound like shit.. and I'm sticking to that opinion. However, what is really important is how they sound to you and nobody else. I, just as anyone else, could always be wrong, or we could have different opinions what is a good sound. Chances are big we do. Try them out, if you like it, good for you. Also, the word shit is in comparison with microphones like SM81 for overheads, and while it's maybe a bit strong word to use, I do feel that overheads are so important that you should use the best mics you can get hold of there. IIRC you did had perfectly good mics for the rest of the setup.

Just trying to give my honest opinion, and not out to offend anybody.

Actually, you don't have to go far up in price to beat the SC-1, I would say the Behringer ECM8000 does a better job as overheads, and they're even cheaper than the SC-1. They're omni though, so their usability and sound will depend on the room. Nice flat response, a bit selfnoise but for drums that don't matter.

I have an SC-2 and a pair of MicroTech Gefell M300's for sdc's. The SC-2 still gets use and I don't regret getting it.

So.....assuming I end up thinking they sound like shit too....I do have a Rode NTK and a Shure 87a as far as condensers go, and maybe could borrow a few others if I tried. Question being, how bad is it to use two different mics as overheads? I've always read that they should be the same mic, but if that's not an option ( I can't go buy a pair of good condensers) and I need to use what I have, would that be a huge problem?
