ADAT XT vs. Apogee

Hello All!

I am going to be transferring some drum tracks from a Tascam 388 to my PC for furthur overdubbing and mixing. My plan is to use my ADAT XT and the ADAT connect card to buss the stuff in and turn it into WAV files.
I have been reading about A/D conversion..

My question is this, in your opinion would I bee better off doing the transfers from the 388 through a lower end 24/48 Apogee A/D or should I use my ADATS and be happy?

Am I splitting hairs?

Do you think I'm fat?

Those pants DO make your but look big. The Apogee converters are better for sure that the ADATs. Which Apogee? Rosetta? AD8000? If you have easy access, go for it but the Rosetta is a two track unit so you'd have to make multiple passes aand then line them up in your multi track editor. Personally, I'd probably just send them thru the ADAT.

Well actually the guy in my bands next door neighbor has a pretty nifty Digital set up at his house, I am not sure about the model quite yet, does that make a big difference, and if so is it still safe to assume that any Apogee is still a better bet than the ADAT?

The Apogee Rosetta is two tracks, the other is an eight channel unit. Oh, and wear strips, it'll make you look thinner.
 
I was told the other day that the A/D's in the adats really rock,he has a digi 001 and reckons the adat A/D's sound better, go figure!

Little question because your not recording with the Adat only using the A/D's does the affect the bit rate (the older Adats are 16 bit and the new ones 20) or is that determined by the master source?
 
No, the converters in the ADATs would be doing all the conversion so if it was an old blackface machine, it's going to output 16 bits/44.1 or 48KHz. And the converters are good. An Apogee is just better.
 
he has the Xt version, which A/D was at 18 bit... i wonder if there is anyway to keep the ADAT from dithering it down to 16 before you can sent it through the ADAT transfer.

p.s. - got my used MOTU 2408 today :cool: grrrrr.
 
Are the XT's 18 bit?? i thought they were 16 and the XT20 20 bit?

Anyway 16 ,18 not a biggie.
 
they dont record 18 bit. Their converters are 18 bit, the XTs that is. That was their selling point over the regular 16 bit machines. then dither to 16 to record, still have the higher headroom leftover.
 
So uuuhhh....

So if I am using an XT as A/D into my pc and not using a tape is it sending 16 or 18 bits?

Can't you digitally transfer the data from the ADAT to your PC? I thought that was what the ADAT connect cards were all about. :confused:
 
Yes you can transfer the info via the Adat PC card.

16 bits? So at what point does the 18 bits come into play?
