ok i have a omni samson condenser mic and a pg 58 shure. when recording vox and guitar at the same time would the best setup be to mic the guitar with the condenser, and use the shure for vocals? im also thinking of doing a few classical pieces using stereo micing using these two mics, what would be the best way to position them and what setting should i have the condenser on? omni? cardiod?

cheers

I can't.............
The stereo thing is out of the question as you have no stereo mics or even similar mics.
In answer to the other question, I wouldn't use either for either but if you must, sing into the 58 and stick the omni 2 feet off the 12th fret. This isn't going to sound good but it'll work. The omni will pick up everything but that's what they do....

i thought i would get a pretentious answer like that. I dont really want to use them mics either mate, i know there bottom of range and everything else and would rather use some akg 414s or something similar. i just want to get the best out of them.

He wasn't being pretentious - he was being serious. I think that setup is the best place to start as well, with what ya got.

You can get surprisingly passable results with just about any mic, its just a matter of slapping on headphones and moving the mics around that you've got until you find a sweet spot.

Its not a hard and fast answer, but that's recording - nothing is set in stone, and no one on a forum can tell you "Based on these mics, use the following placement and you will sound pro".

Doesn't work like that, as you may very well know - so, roll with what suggestions have been made, and then come back with questions if that doesn't work out for ya - good luck!

If the Samson has a figure 8 pattern, you can get a nice stereo recording using the MS method, with just those two mics.
