The blending of major chords and a bluesy scale solo made for an interesting blend of styles. Almost sounded like southern rock played by Enya. Very neat blend and an excellent recording.

At 1:05 or so another part takes the lead. Sort of violin sounding. Was that synth or ebow?

that was a Roland XV 20-20 patch.. The ebow overlaps the start of it though..

The main ebow parts are 0:26 - 1:05, and then again from 1:22 until 2:02..

I think an EBow would work much better with a real amp.. I used the Pod Pro through the Blue max compressor, but it doesn't capture the full nuances.. I should be able to get it much softer and have more room to get louder, but processors get iffy when you try and play too softly into them, and they sound terrible when you clip the input.. It's easy to clip the input if you use the ebow right above the bridge pickup.. I usually switch top the neck pickup and turn the tone knob all the way down.. I also add a good amount of reverb.. I plan on doing some experiments with a real amp soon, even if I only use it for solos..

all the strings were from the XV 20-20 and the synth bass was from an Alesis QS6.1 using the Vintage synth expansion card.. I didn't add anything to the synth sounds.. Whatever effects they had on them when I turned the knob was what I used.. I didn't record any midi.. Everything was done as audio.. It took a lot of punching in, but when I'm done, I'm done.. I also enjoy actually playing the keys as opposed to programming and all that..

The drums were programmed in fruity loops but triggering an external drum module.. (Roland TD-8)

If I was making this tune for myself, I would have done more with the drums and made them louder.. My dads 71 and I don't think he's into a big drum sound.. :D

The acoustic was DI'd (I fooled you all!) :D

The chain was -acoustic -Blue Max compressor.. I added some reverb, and a hint of chorus.. It was doubled (played twice).. Yeah I know micing it is the way to go, but I just wanted to record something halfway decent quickly.. I knew people wouldn't like the acoustic sound! :D

Everything was tuned to drop C#..

After the recording was done on the Tascam 788, I burned a cd and imported the wave into Sonar.. I added some minor e.q. and some gentle limiting..

I appreciate all the feedback guys.. To me it's stuff like this is what this place is for.. (Sending out recordings to civilians and knowing nothing is harsh or sonically offensive.) :D

I played it over the phone for my dad and he got teary eyed.. He bought a guitar for himself and tried to learn how to play.. He wanted to be able to jam with me when I visit my folks in Florida.. He gave up because it hurt his fingers too much, but he did manage to learn a few classics.. He sent the guitar to me in the mail.. He always asks why I dont send him music.. :D I would never want my parents to hear the other stuff so I'm trying to write them a whole CD of mellow stuff.. I wish I could get down to Florida and see them more..

I think I may need to get some heavy music out of my system next...

thanks guys, hope all the new and old dads out there are/were taken care of.. :D

Great tune and great choice of sounds! Sounds like a room full of instruments. I have no gripes because it all sounded awesome!

The chord at about 0:20 sounded slightly weird (<--- me nitpicking). Some WAY good stuff here. Manages to sound unlike a normal ballad. It has just the right amount of trippiness make it unique. Not too trippy for a man of your father's age, I'd think. I like the string sections. Great mixing on those. Very full. It kinda ends too suddenly but there's such great stuff in it that I don't mind. I'm amazed.

Ok, on second listen I didn't hear the 0:20 'weird riff' so you can forget it :D

Very nice tune B.SABBATH.

I was expecting vocals to kick in, but as an instrumental it's very smooth. I like the direct gits'. Pretty good sounding string samples to. Wish I had those, the nanopiano ones suck.

Hah! If I hurry, I'm actually gonna get in on the first page of one of your threads for a change! Every bit as clean as I expected, excellent recording as usual. Gotta get me one o' them ebows.

It's very very cool that your dad takes an interest and involvement in this particular passion of yours. It's also very cool to be able to reciprocate by sending him the tune.

Pretty tune man-nicely orchestrated/arranged. Not sure if I dug the E-bow so much in this one-it has a "special effect" sound to it-compared to the rest of the sounds-which are nice and smooth and familiar. Still I bet your dad will be mightily impressed. Strange they havent heard your stuff before. My dad just turned 60 and my bro gave him the new zep discs lol-needless to say he dont mind even the heaviest stuff I've done. Anyway-you definetely got the talent to pull off anything it seems. Nice job on this-no real mix comments except the ebow thing. Thumbs up.

fire it up!

mail me a doobie sam..it's still dry over here and your stuff is starting to sound..."normal":) . haha, no man this sounds great in every way. I'd be a very proud pop to get this for a F/D gift. Rock on Sam..

I love it Sam.....this is very fine and I'll add it to my travelin' CDs.
As for the mix......hmmmmmm......ya' know what?
I don't think I give a crap about mixes anymore unless they're bad.
This sounds wonderful (very nice flute patch ). Maybe if I had it here in my system I might mix it differently.....maybe not......hell, next time you mix it, you'll probably mix it different.
I'm starting to believe that once you've gotten past gross errors like distortion and such, all mixing decisions are a matter of taste.

So I'm just gonna gush on and on about how much I like this , and that last one you did also.
Very nice! :)

Hi Sam,

No complaints here bro, just kudos.

Your dad has inspired a nice work of art here. Truly, he created a work of art, YOU, with some help from mom and our Divine Creator of course, and this is one of the many fruits of his { your dad's} labors.

I'm gonna have to get used to this e-bow sound. Not your's man, you play it fine.....simply the intrinsic sonority that emits from it....to me , it sounds like a woodwind/string hybrid coupled with a slightly animalistic plaintiveness tone to it especially when portamento &/or glissandi are applied . I'm not sure yet if I hate it or love it???!!!?!?

Either way, dad will cherish the composition!

Nice job esp as no midi sequencing was incorporated!!

Ralph

Damn that's some good orchestratin'. I wouldn't mind hearing a little more drums. The kit sound fits surprisingly well but sounds a little hidden.

very cool and full of heart. I enjoyed the mix and the playing very much. The keys are exciting. I keep kickin this old Korg and then rubbin it sensously to make up, but I just may have to have one of them alesis machines. The guitars are always in tasteful hands and show it. The ebow thing is still growin on me, but has some good flavours.

Man I really enjoyed that. It had a great tenderness to it.

"Fathers Day - The Movie" (and like Groundhog Day, I could listen over and over :) )

The arrangement and instrument/patch choices were real nice. I loved them. It was the perfect length too.

Iwould love to hear it with the acoustic miced - Sorry! I coudn't help it ;) :D

Mixed real nice as well. I thought the ending/bridge/break where the guitar dropped out had a little darker feel to it especially before the flute came in. Maybe a touch too dark for me for this song, but hey it's B.Sab - you had to throw that in didn't you! :D

Excellent work!

Well that's definitely one of the better DI sounds I've heard around here. I usually want to break stuff.

Very creative music Sam. Sounds emotional even for synth music. Wasn't hard to conjure up appropriate imagery.

Mix suggestions are generally preference for synth stuff I think, but nothing really struck me as being really off. I thought it got a bit crowded toward the beginning, but it wasn't really a mix problem, just maybe one or two superfluous themes going on. No biggie.

Good tune...and good playing Sam!

Tom

Hey Sam,

This sounds real nice man.
Great DI sound,I think only the bass notes give it away.
I love the pan flute,my favorite.
Some nice piano playing there too!

Really cool of you to write this for your Dad,probably the best one he ever got.;)

Pete

An acoustic from Sam/ I got to check this out :D

Ok first thing that bothered me was not enough ambience...
that ebow sound a little harsh like that upfront...
great tune though... great arangement ideas... love it...

cheers

Took ten seconds to win me over.

..this is genius...

@1:28 the ebow track may have had a small volume spike (please please don't turn it down tho)

Took me two listens, but I'm down with the last section.

It sounded to me like it might be a mixed a bit hot, but it didn't do anything ugly on my cheap headphones.
