AA3 and old echo Layla 20 bit

I am using Adobe Audition 3.0 , with two echo layla 20bit. for recording, and i also have a audiophile 2496 as my sound out. No matter HOW i setup the buffer sizes and settings i cannot get the system to work continuously. Some days I can record 30 tracks and mix with no problems, but other days i have a constant skipping and stopping in the audio. This happens both during recording and playback. once it starts.. it won't stop skipping. I have 4gigs of ram so i don't see how ram could be the problem. My computer is a pentium D 3.0
Any suggestions to what could be the problem?
 
How many hard drives? 2 would be much better than 1. 1 for the program and the other to write/store/playback the data.
