In 1969 most young guys were NOT listening to Frank Sinatra. But, my God, those big studios had wonderful facilities and incredible capability. Low tech by today's measure, but they really understood how to use their equipment. These guys were truly great professionals in the very finest sense of the word. And they were connected… musicians, writers, singers, engineers, producers, etc. I suppose they made a pretty good living too.
I just finished listening to a well kept commercially sold 7 1/2” ips tape of Sinatra’s “A Man Alone”. Produced by Sonny Burke; arranged and conducted by Don Costa; music and lyrics by Rod McKuen; recorded in March 1969 at Western Recorders in Hollywood; the engineer was Lee Herschberg.
What a study in professional recording elegance. 40 years later we can all still learn a lot from them.
