A question about distortion with my A4300

Hi people, I've got another question/problem.
While I'm waiting for the capstan motor to arrive for the A3400, I pulled out the A4300 and cleaned the heads, they looked pretty good, so I tried recording on some tape to see how it sounded. No matter what tape or instrument or mic I used I got distortion, even at very low input levels. I could hear it in the headphones even before recording on the tape, and it didn't get better on tape.
After this experiment I put on some pre-recorded reels, of the home made variety, and played them to see if there was distortion, and there was not, they sounded great.
The last time I recorded with it was about....... 15 years ago, and now that I think about it I seem to recall that at one of the last band practices, when I went to play it back, it was distorted. Someone else had been messing with it, so I chalked it up to that person setting the incoming level to high.

So here is the question, if someone set the incoming level too high can it hurt the machine?

And if not, what is wrong with my baby???
