GREAT JOB!

Not that my opinion means anything to you. Man, is that Tommy Shaw singing backup? UP THERE!

Almost sounds like the bass is getting out of hand in a couple of places...just during the breaks, really.

I don't like the way it ends.

cool tune. In my useless opinion that you'll ignore, the vox levels are perfect.

Sabb...sorry for the delays...Internet problems on THEIR end...that have given me sparse time to get online. AND....
Chad is NOT taking my place...thank you:mad:  First off, he doesn't even have a dog in his avatar...jee wizz....!!

ok ok...

Nice tune.... the warbly guitar ...can take it or leave it. I know where you are trying to go with the sound... something unique, etc... but...maybe another sound...although this one works. I know you say..."hey, I can't shred"...but I'd love to hear some solos that you put as much effort in as your vocals (supposedly). I'd also like to hear a "live" version sound on the guitars too... Like some real crankin' amps on some of your stuff too. To me, Van Halen has one of the best recorded guitar sounds (and probably I'll need to put on the protective gear for that statement), and I'd like to see you go that way a little, if possible. I think you'll keep your signature sound, for sure...but some "room" (or auditorium!!), sound on the guitars would make them sound more real and alive. Even just some short verb to give some space to them. Vocals are getting really good. I always love your stuff, and I'd really like to meet you in person some time...and it'd be fun to even record together...not the colaboration stuff. I think it'd be a blast... I can sit there and watch you get stoned!!! Anywazz....good stuff...no real complaints...just the little stuff mentioned above.

I give this a 5 thumbs down!!!!

This has a Chris Cornell meets Ozzy feel for me. I love the warbly guitar part. I like the vocal sound a lot, both lead and back up. The overall mix is great- lots of breathing room. Guitars sound bitchin' and right on mix wise. I'm not crazy about the drum sound though, for me it lacks a roomy ambient quality. Is that a tight gated verb?

All in all, excellent. I would experiment with a different reverb on the drums if that's possible.

Jon

The vocals are NOT too loud! :D

I thought the mix was very good but perhaps a tad dark overall. This is coming from someone who's lost most of his high end hearing from too many thrashing drummers, though so take it with a grain of salt.

I agree with the ambience on the drums thing. I'd like to hear 'em ricochet off the walls a bit when it gets heavy.

Did I mention that the vocals are not too loud?:D My feeling is that if you can't hear the lyrics, they are too quiet. When you can understand them all, they are just right. When you can't hear the track so well anymore, they are definitely too loud! (Well, maybe!)

Erland - good to hear from you.. I am working on some songs for my parents, and I'm trying to take a very minimal approach to them. Probably just acoustic and vocals, or piano and vocals.. Maybe if they're not too embaressing I'll post one of them.. thanks for checking this one out, it's always nice to hear from you..

jamal buchet/chrisharris - thanks for the comments..

mixmkr - ha!! :D I was hoping you would catch that little comment.. Glad to see your around! Yeah it seems my guitar sound is getting old to some people.. I would agree with you that Eddie V.H. had a great guitar sound. He is also a great player though, and doesn't need the bag of smoke and mirrors that I have come to rely on.. I just got my other guitar back from the shop, and I got a lot of work done to it.. It is my main guitar and it is tuned to E-flat, so I imagine the next few tunes will have more of an organic sound.. I am going to take a little break from the ultra-low tuning for awhile.. I agree that 'space' is another thing that's missing from my tunes.. It seems no one is complaining about the basic mix aspects of the tunes, so I guess it's time to start learning how to put on the finishing touches.. (so, how do I do it?) Yeah I think it would be a blast to meet you! (and some other dudes here too) I mentioned awhile back that it would be great to have a jamfest type thing with the people from the clinic.. It seems people who mainly post in the clinic, are the people who should be meeting in a jamfest setting anyhow.. Just picture the line up! :D Until then, I wouldn't mind doing a collab with you.. Send a 320 mp3 of anything you think I might not ruin! :D thanks mix, glad to see your alive and well! :D

jjtcorsair - thanks for the feedback man.. I love Chris Cornell, and of course Ozzy... As far as the reverb on the drums, I would agree with you that it could be greatly improved on.. I didn't add any extra reverb to anything.. I just tweaked the sound at the source.. The drum verb came right from the sound module.. I don't think it was gated.. I just raised the default reverb setting a bit and printed it.. I still have much to learn about the proper use of reverb. I should be a bit heavier handed with it.. Any suggestions are always appreciated, thanks!

crawdad - I agree about the drums, and about the mix sounding too dark.. I added a good amount of e.q. on this one too.. I think my monitors are playing tricks on me because it did sound a lot different on other speakers, than it did on my Event 20/20's.. thanks for the feedback crawdaddy-o!

B. Sabbath--I do know that certain monitors can really play tricks on your ears. I used to work in a studio that had these expensive Tannoys. The speakers themselves were very detailed and transparent sounding. Unfortunately, they hyped the highs so much that when we'd take the mixes and play them on other systems, they were terrible--dark and muted. It ws too bad because the Tannoys were a joy to listen to, but they just didn't translate to the real world.

I hear that crawdad.. I even listened on different sets of speakers too.. I'm just going to have to do what I do with vocals.. I put them louder than I think is necessary, and others think it sounds good.. I will have to e.q. things past the point I'm comfortable with, and maybe the end result will be better.. It stinks having to second guess myself like that though.. one day I'll figure this thing out, and then I'll only have to worry about the performance..

thanks..

Well here's a bump, I'm getting to this one late.

WOW, I listened to a few songs on the page and I am really diggin' your production. Everything sounds so pro and the Sabbath influence is apparent. Loved all of it, wouldn't change a thing. Now after hearing your stuff, I'm even happier that you liked Spice Clock. Great work! :D

a promise is a promise

forgot to give this a listen on the monitors, so here 'tis! :D

For the 63,758th time, your songwriting is f'n killer...

Was it an SM58 or some other dynamic on vox? Seems the mix would spring to life with some highs on the vox trax... certain phrases with a rolloff at 200, others at 500 (where currently the "radio voice" sound is). No LD condensor in your immediate future? :(

The rhythm bed during the verses sounds like it has a huge dip between 400Hz and 1k... is this to make vox sit better? IMHO a much smaller cut would sound better, with some more lows rolled off the vox. (the way I can hear that "dip"? 300Hz and 2k stand out quite a bit, but they're not too loud... indicates that between them, there is a gap. Also, the rhythm bed sounds like it needs that "aaaaaahhhhh" octave back (1k))

Not many highs in the mix, either. Now this seems to be a problem a lot of us have... in a current mix, I plan on soloing each track for highs (to see if they're there)... if they're there, I'll try to bring them out WITHOUT boosting. If not, the mix needs more shakers, hi-hats, etc.

BTW I, too monitor on 20/20s... and it does seem like highs are exaggerated. Listen to SLuiCe's "Chrysalis" on 'em. Too crisp? Now, listen to it in your car. Sweeeeet, ain't it :D

I'm hearing slight compression on the entire mix... when the heavy drum hits come in... (or maybe my ears are ducking the mix on the loud hits? )

Is it possible to open up the drum panning a bit? IMO they're scrunched together a bit too much.

Maybe some room sound on the snare could help.

---

Again, I'm no pro... just a wiener who got some EQ training and listened to garageband.com waaaaayy too long :D You're the musician, and there are about 50 frequent clinic visitors here who could call themselves legit engineers before I ever could ;) Great stuff, Sam... and if you need a grain of salt to take this post with... hell, we got a whole LAKE of that here... come jump in :p Later.

Chad

EDIT: Damn! Forgot to mention the one thing that really kicks me in the balls on this is that F'N KILLER ride after 2:07!!! FUN-KEEEEEE!! :D

ok...I had to listen to this again...

the drums are not on, man... cause they come in and out. Have you tried lining them up? I don't like the chorus'd sound on the gtr, and the production will make you starve. Also...I think if you went to the "General MIDI" section on your keyboards...you might find a better bass sound. If I had half the equipment you had, I'd bet I could get half the sound you do...maybe even less...depends on whose hand is on the volume control. I'm not too keen on the mix issues, but maybe some of the "pros" around here would like to step in and offer some ideas that we couldn't even concieve. I feel for you... Maybe if you had a user name like Axel Dumbell, you'd get more responses with some creative, constructive advise. As it is...I think you'll just have to suffer with not being able to tune to standard pitch on your guitars. As it is, as a home reccor, you're only allowed to come as close as a 1/2 step lower. Pros only get to tune to E. Also, maybe an exciter might bring some excitement into your posts too... Anyway...keep singing what you feel. If you don't, people will call you a pussy. ...Worse yet...even a moron.. oh yeah...I'm sure you'll run into people who know what's best for you, tell you about internet etiquette, and the such. Trust them....they'll take you out of the bedroom and into the stars.... Be good young man...follow your truths... be sincere to those with only 'cool' avatars. You're a lucky guy....;)

Sam,
Your music is a bit out there for my own tastes, but man it wouldn't matter what style of music you were playing because you definitely got loads of talent. I can tell you avoid the norm and reach out for the uncharted in the way you put your songs together. Keep up the good work.

participant - damn dude, that was a serious reply.. You are right about the compression.. I used some on the drums, and then I got brave and used some on the whole mix.. I don't hear the breathing though.. My ears are getting fried fast.. The mic was a cheap EV dynamic piece o' crap.. You are right about the 20/20's.. If you listened on them, you heard exactly what I was hearing.. As far as there not being a lot of highs, I guess I am paranoid because I hear a lot of mixes that are tooo bright, and that is something I try to avoid.. You can always add a bit of treble on your system.. I don't like mixes that are too crisp, but I guess between the 20/20's misleading me, and my paranoia, I over did it on the 'mud knob'.. As far as e.q. goes, I just kept turning some knobs until it sounded muddy enough. :) I guess I should get one of those spectrum analyzers that you use.. It seems to help.. (Although I'm still waiting to hear your stuff) The drums can only be e.q.'d etc., because they are on a 2 track stereo mix.. I don't think I can pan them any further. It's good thought for the next one though.. Thanks for the extensive reply man.. It helps.. :)

mixmkr - You ballbuster! :D That post was words to live by! (some of it anyway)

George Parler - It's a bit out there for my tastes too! :D Thanks for the feedback man. I'm working on some 'normal' music..

yES i like this tune. I'm not ready to comment the mixing in here, but I really like the song. It has a Trouble, St. Vittus, black sabbath moody (from sabbath bloody sabbath), especially the vocal lines. Is Ozzy singing? :-)
Congratulations. Nice song. Nicer recording too.

ps.: sorry for my english.

Here's another ego puffer for ya Sam:

I'll usually grab your stuff just because I like your style and like listening to it. Unfortunately, my laptop speakers suck and I don't "critically" listen.

Thus, FWIW, this was another good one. The downer flavor reminds me of Nevermore. Funny, I usually don't listen to lyrics, but that "wife/sad for life" line also popped out for me as well as everyone else.

Thanks for sharing.

Matt

I think the drums could be tighter, but the B.SABBATH vibe is always in the guitars:)

Do you listen to Faith No More by any chance? I am not a big metal guy, but I like their stuff, and your songs sometimes remind me of them, just a little bit.

Cool tune

AL

How the hell did I miss this???

Oh yeah, been busy with life.

What a dark, depressing & heavy song!

I dig it!:D

Seems like the drums could be a bit more up front during the staccato heavy breaks, but other than that it sounds great on my cheap JBL's and old Altecs. ;)

And no, the vocals are not too loud.:p

Capitani - hey man, 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' is a great album, and I appreciate that comment.. I have been listening to Black Sabbath since I was 11 years old.. :) It makes me happy to hear something rubbed off.. thanks!

Lopp - hey Lopp, always cool to hear from you.. That is the first time I ever heard 'Nevermore' mentioned on this site.. A friend of mine just started getting me into them.. 'The heart collector' is my favorite tune so far.. We should do a collaboration forged by metal.. :) thanks for dropping a comment man.. and remember, "Crush your enemies" :D

A1A2 - I guess the drums could be better.. I'm spreading myself a bit too thin.. I like old 'Faith No More'.. like 'the Real Thing' album etc.. Glad to hear there is some Sabbath in the guitars.. :) I appreciate the comments man..

M. Brane - 'dark, depressing, and heavy' That is a perfect description of me, screw the song! :D I'm still working on my drum skills (or lack of) and I guess I should have given them more of a say in the mix.. Thanks a lot for still bothering man.. I still think the vocals are too loud! :D

Hey dude,

I liked the low end alot. Your tune pushed my ashtray into my lap within the first 30secs. Isn't that a good sign? I thought I read it in the manual:).

Your vox are nicely mixed without the shy overeffect that you use to cling to. Effected, yes. Shy, no.

IN the world of "Sami arrangments" this was nothing earth shattering but, it was buttery in the transitions and moody as all get out.

I hope these are old lyrics. You can't tap that muse forever. It will kill any prospect of future endevours and blind the inner eye.(o.k. not fair as far as comments go, but I found myself concerned on an empithatic level).

I liked the tonal approach and exection of the git on the exit.

Peace,

Theron.

Totally dug it!I love the use of synth in a metal tune!
Drums a very believable(what do you use for drums?Forgive me if you already elaborated,I didn't read the other reply's)
My only critisisms are:
1:Vocals(Lead and backing)are a bit more up front than I would like.
2:I really couldn't discern a bass guitar.Don't know if it was just low in the mix,or nonexistant.I should listen again,I suppose.
Nice work,cool tune!
