a promise is a promise
forgot to give this a listen on the monitors, so here 'tis!
For the 63,758th time, your songwriting is f'n killer...
Was it an SM58 or some other dynamic on vox? Seems the mix would spring to life with some highs on the vox trax... certain phrases with a rolloff at 200, others at 500 (where currently the "radio voice" sound is). No LD condensor in your immediate future?
The rhythm bed during the verses sounds like it has a huge dip between 400Hz and 1k... is this to make vox sit better? IMHO a much smaller cut would sound better, with some more lows rolled off the vox. (the way I can hear that "dip"? 300Hz and 2k stand out quite a bit, but they're not too loud... indicates that between them, there is a gap. Also, the rhythm bed sounds like it needs that "aaaaaahhhhh" octave back (1k))
Not many highs in the mix, either. Now this seems to be a problem a lot of us have... in a current mix, I plan on soloing each track for highs (to see if they're there)... if they're there, I'll try to bring them out WITHOUT boosting. If not, the mix needs more shakers, hi-hats, etc.
BTW I, too monitor on 20/20s... and it does seem like highs are exaggerated. Listen to SLuiCe's "
Chrysalis" on 'em. Too crisp? Now, listen to it in your car. Sweeeeet, ain't it
I'm hearing slight compression on the entire mix... when the heavy drum hits come in... (or maybe my ears are ducking the mix on the loud hits?

)
Is it possible to open up the drum panning a bit? IMO they're scrunched together a bit too much.
Maybe some room sound on the snare could help.

Again, I'm no pro... just a wiener who got some EQ training and listened to garageband.com waaaaayy too long

You're the musician, and there are about 50 frequent clinic visitors here who could call themselves legit engineers before I ever could

Great stuff, Sam... and if you need a grain of salt to take this post with... hell, we got a whole LAKE of that here... come jump in

Later.

EDIT:
Damn! Forgot to mention the one thing that really kicks me in the balls on this is that F'N KILLER ride after 2:07!!! FUN-KEEEEEE!!
