cool tune...........

heavy intro...... cool harmonies happening..... still reminds me of AIC, which is a good thing.......

nice grungy guitar tones, with clarity and grunge at the same time....a good performance here.........

i like the break down parts, the synth pads are cool and kinda far away, and the solo guitar has a real nice tremelo warble effect on it, man, it's fucked up!

nice job of programming the drums......or are these synth drums played? good sounds on em.......

nice quiet section........ lots of space there....... reverbs are a nice touch for that otherworldly effect........

the ending quiet section, i think, could go on for some time..... for me, it's too short.......

once you've gone there, and gotten that mood, which you've accomplished, you can sustain it for a while........
nice job.

kick ass. you're definitely a seasoned home rec'r and it shows. all the right things in all the right places. awesome vocals.

HI Sam,

I have to second the others comments. The mix is ear candy. The arrangement is very varied and interesting, the structure of the song is surprising and creative.
The musical performance is tight, the vocals are strong and clear and well placed in the mix.

I really like the atmosphere you've created here; it sounds as if you're in control of things, knowing where you're heading (many times I wish I did - with my own stuff, that is! :)).
The guitar parts/sounds support the mood perfecly as well as the synth strings are cleverly added, almost as an mitigating circumstance.

The bass is comming through allright through my headphones and stereo but I definitely miss a real rock bass on this particular track. That's about the only objection I can think of.

Great job. Congratulations !

Best regards
Erik

Quake 3???

Nah, I didn't. I looked for it for a few days, then I figured you were touring with Tool or something. It never came...

BTW, I've been trying that same method of mixing vox a notch above what sounds good to me, and I still get bitched at. You've done well with this one though. I think the trick to mixing your own vocals is to wait a day or two after recording them, when the subtle flaws you were desparately trying to improve on (or a vision you are trying to match) are no longer at the forefront of your attention. If I don't get the vocal tracks down within a few hours, I let it go and move on. There are only so many hours in a day and I've got a hammer to swing and you've got pipes to soulder.
:D

Must be what's takin me so long... you guys are naturally better singers (sam KILLS me with that "... AAAAND LEEEEEEAVE YOU A MESSSAGEEE!" from "unwell") Here I am easily doing 300, 400, 500 takes... just to throw out about 95% of them, and comp the rest. Then, I go back and listen to each word. If a word sucks (pronunciation, rhythm, or off-key), I resing that line several times and comp it in. Then, during early test mixes, I'll listen to vocs, paying attention to EVERY WORD. A word's too low? Automated fader adjustment, and move on. Word's too quiet? Yeah... it get's that anal :p

Vocs are almost done on this toon tho. Just a few words need fixed now... seems a KEY to this is to listen on different set-ups. Vox that sound in-key on the monitors may sound like a drunk, constipated moose in the car :)

Bump #2... sooner or later, the monitors will get a shot at this song, sam :)

Guernica - hey G, I didn't get a new mic, but I did things a bit different for the vocals.. I used e.q. instead of the Sonic Maximizer.. (on vocals) I also compressed the hell out of them.. I think they are too loud, but people on this board have a thing for loud vocals I think.. :D As far as the rhythm guitar chain, it was a Strat (tuned to drop B), into the J-Station, into the Blue Max Compressor, into the BBE Sonic Maximizer, into my Boss Pedals, and then even more compression from the 788.... I can't say enough about the Blue Max compressor.. It has A LOT to do with me being able to get the ultra low sounds to sound decent.. The leads were the same chain, but I used a Boss PS-5 pitch Shifter pedal.. The last lead before the outro, I also used the flanger on the 788, but I set it to an unnatural setting.. You can create some sick effects when you use effects wrong! :D I'm glad to hear the vocals sound good.. As far as you not being able to sleep, welcome to my world! thanks G! :D :(

participant - hey Chad, first, I don't use the computer for recording, so I can't use Waves or anything like that.. All the reverbs were done at the source.. (drum module, guitar processor, vocal processor etc.) I didn't add any reverb after.. I try to nail as much of the sound as possible while I'm laying down the tracks, so I'll have less to do later. I know people reccomend other ways, but this works best for me.. thanks for the vocal comments too, they hit hard because I worry about them the most.. I can't wait to finally hear a song from you! I bet it will sound sweet.. thanks man, let me know if this passes your monitor test! :D

jcmm - great comments! :D thanks for checking it out man!

muzemyman - hey muze, I had to make a lower vocal mix for myself because I really think the good people of this board have a thing for REALLY LOUD VOCALS.. :D Also, I try to make up in guitar sounds, what I lack in guitar ability.. It always amazes me when someone picks out some lyrics.. I'll never get over hearing someone repeat a line that I thought of while I was in the bathroom! :D (o.k. too much information) Thanks for the vocal comments, it really is what I worry about most.. I am working on fixing my thumb problems, but I have to first get it out of my butt! :D thanks as always muze! (my man)

I'll be back later, thanks for bothering guys! :)

just wanted to say I listened ... and I care .. :D
cool tune Sam ... there is one melody thing that I think is in all your tunes ... creative arrangement .... i still would like to see you go outside this style ... do you have an accoustic gtr??? :D
cheers

oh ye... in the begining on "soul less mate" not sure if you not nailing the notes or intend it to the way it is... it's kind of that way throughout so not sure ... the vocals just on the border of beeing to much for me ... it's nice to have them up ... the processing on them compliments the style IMHO ...
cheers

how did you record the guitars and the bass? what pre-amp did you use?

Kramer - thanks dood!! I don't think I'll ever get used to the vocals being this loud.. I had to make a vocal down mix for myself.. I back up everything now, but with my luck, the backups will be bad.. :D Yes, the women in my life have been worthy of a song! (or 20) :D

Scott Tansley - hey Scott, that's cool to hear man.. You know how much I dig your stuff.. yeah I am a moody S.O.B., but I'm sure most people have seen that already! :D thanks for your ears on this one man! Looking forward to hearing new tunes from you.

Lt. Bob - thanks Lt.! If anything has improved, it is directly because of people like you... I'm still not comfortable with the vocals being this loud, (I made a vocal down mix for myself) I think people around here have a thing for LOUD vocals.. Some peoples vox (mine) are not meant to be heard this clearly.. As I said before, I try to make up in guitar sound, what I lack in guitar talent.. I am nothing without effects.. thanks Lt.! We will be talking soon bro!

joro - thanks man! Yeah I listen to a little Ozzy, ya know? :D

thanks again for humoring me guys.. I'll be bach!

cool tune as usual-another joyous relationship tune hehe. Like the nice deep progression of the verse-interesting tone at the change-The tremolo sounds a little fast to me but what do i know....The ebow part is very interesting-I like those jabbing keys. Vocals sit well ---I see you added 3rd harmony to 2nd verse-that change at 2:10 or so is cool but sounds like it could use something to build more-a little solo action maybe??

Not much to reccomend when I listen to your stuff-mix sounds great guitars excellent-I can only listen as a producer wannabe and ask what other goodies could go in there. You always mix up your songs with unexpected changes I luuuv that, anyway nothing to say here but good job (again)

A few places in the drumming sound weird, but it sounds like the sounds of your drums don't change that much depending on how hard you hit them. I may be wrong, though. You know, the velocity thing

Yeah.. the main problem I'm having with the drums now is, I am using the cheaper drum pads, and they don't react like the good ones. I totally hear what you mean though, they sound strange to me at times too.. There is also some 'bad hits' that didn't trigger properly.. This is the price I have to pay because I don't know how to program drums, so I have to play everything.. I am really going to start looking into some type of programming for the drums.. It takes soo long just to try and get a perfect drum take when your playing them.. You seem to get some of the best programmed drum sounds of anyone here.. I really have to work on it.. (among other things) thanks Crank! I'm glad you LOVE the outro synth!

Triple M - hey Trip, glad to get the positive feed from ya man.. I know your into harmonies, so I was curious to see what you were going to say about this one.. I really pushed the 3 part harmony thing this time.. I agree that there could be more singing and less instrumental parts, but it makes it a bit more moody this way.. :) thanks as always for your straight up thoughts..

boydrj - You said, "the vocals could still come up a bit" Are you crazy man!!! They are way too loud as it is.. :D I made a vocal down mix for myself.. I really am suprised by all the positive feed.. thanks doc!

enrichenryus - read Cranky Ones response for some drum excuses.. :D You are right.. At first I thought the drums sounded really good on this, but I realize that is just what I wanted to think.. Unfortunately, the drums are recorded as 2 track audio.. No midi, or seperate tracks.. :( I really must learn how to record midi also, so I can have more flexibility later on.. I'd rather someone hate the drums rather than hate the vocals though.. :D I also have to invest in some V-Pads I think.. thanks for your honest thoughts man, it's apppreciated.. If you have any suggestions, feel free to school me.. I need all the help I can get..

thanks for all the feedback guys, I appreciate it.. I'll be back later..

nice job of programming the drums......or are these synth drums played?

GONZO-X - hey gonzo, I played drum pads hooked up to a Roland TD-8.. That's why the drums are pretty simple.. I had enough trouble just getting this down.. hopefully I'll learn how to program drums because I'll be able to get better drum beats down than what I can actually play. thanks for the comments man..

JR#97 - hey JR, thanks for the feedback, but a special thanks for your feedback in 'the other forum' ;) :D

Erik O. - your totally right about the bass.. I should have used my 5 string, but I need to intonate it and I got imaptient with the song, so I just layed down a simple synth bass line for some extra low end support.. I never really know how a tune is going to turn out at the end because I am usually writing it, and recording it at the same time.. I really should give it more thought as I go, but it's fun being suprised at the end result.. Thanks for the positive feedback man..

SLuiCe - you are sooooo right about not mixing the vocals the same day.. On this song, I did the guitar solos and vocals the same day.. then I mixed it and had it on Nowhere 30 minutes later. :D I should take some extra time, but I love the instant feedback.. It is getting harder for me to tell what sounds good anymore because I think I am starting to go deaf.. I have a constant ringing in my ears already... and when I say constant, I mean all the time.. I think part of it is because when I lay vocals, I need the headphones to be CRANKED.. I try to simulate the volume of a live jam.. I had my friend put on my headphones and check out the volume that I sing at, and he jumped out of his seat the second the music started! :D

participant - hey Chad, believe me when I tell you that I do many, many, many, many takes.. I loop one sentence at a time.. I would think that by the time a song is done, I have taken a few hundred stabs at it.. Although, the vocals for this song took me 2 1/2 hours. (that includes coming up with the lyrics) Even though most of the lyrics are free style.. I really cant wait to finally hear a song from you.. That will be a big thread indeed.. Thanks as always for your feedback Chad... I guess since mixmkr doesn't comment much anymore, you are taking over his spot! :D

Fed - I always get a kick out of your comments! :D I will be buying an acoustic soon.. The one I have hurts my fingers.. I am working on some music for my parents, maybe you'll dig those a little more.. As far as the vocals being out in some spots, your probably right.. I am not a 'real' singer by any means.. I am just a hack with too much time on his hands.. :D thanks as always for the feedback man!

ZEKE SAYER - how did it sound man?

Stratomaster - Yeah I think it could probably use a little more action.. I really have to stop with these moody songs.. Thanks for the feedback Strat.. On an off topic commment, I still can barely hear the E-Bow in 'Love and War' Could you turn it up please! :D

Welp, that's everybody! Thanks for all the feedback guys.. It is as always, invaluable to me.. :)

Sam

drums

Sam, you do such a great job doing great drum parts on pads. I was wondering at what point in tracking do you record the drum parts? Like metronome then guitars then drums? or metronome then drums, etc...

They're so friggin' TIGHT

love the vox

"You are my soul less mate" "every day that you were faking"... "one day she'll be my wife..make me sad for the rest of my life" heheheh! Man now that's what i call great lines. Great tune dude, i'll have to check out some more of your tracks.

The vocals i thought were outstanding and really just about right to my ears...the bk-up vocals were as tight as you could ask for, and really mixed well with the lead vox.

Keep up the great work B/S, I'll be keeping an eye out for new material from you...

Hey Sami, a workaround for your loud deafening headphone mix while your singing might be to track the vocals live in front of your monitors. You'd be surprised at how little a problem the spill into the vocal track is.

Just listened again man. This is a killer tune and the vox are rockin!NO they are not too loud.

cool!

SLuiCe - hey Tom, I usually come up with a riff, then I record that to a drum machine beat.. Then I play along on drums to just the guitar without the drum machine.. It's kinda like jamming with your self, only it is far more frustrating because there is no room for timing fluctuations.. The guitars that were recorded to the drum machine are in perfect time, so I know if there is any error, it's my drum playing.. I always add the bass after I do the drums so I can cement them into the guitar.. I didn't always do it like this though.. I have a song on my page called 'a splitting headache', and for that song, I just played 3 and a half minutes of drums and added music when it was done.. I had no idea how it was going to sound, but to this day it is still one of my favorite tunes I ever did.. thanks for the word man..

freshears - thanks ears! appreciate the word.. The amazing part is the vocals only took about 100 takes or so!

Scott Tansley - interesting.. do you do that? I have heard that 'Terry Date' (the producer for Pantera, Soundgarden etc.) does that.. I picture a whole lot of bleed through.. Maybe I would have to use a serious noise gate or something.. Would just the music be coming out of the monitors, or would the vocals as well? thanks Scott!

Kramer - Man these vocals sound incredibly loud to me.. really.. When I listen to it on my home stereo, it really is unsettling at times.. I don't know doood.. I'm working on an instrumental right now.. Those are always much easier.. :D thanks Kramij!

perfect

Hi Sam, this is really great. Glad to have a listen to your stuff. You are more confident with your singing now and it shows. Really good. i would love to here just you and the acoustic or piano. Do it for fun dude, please...Anyway, just to say always listening. Thanks

Cooper

....damn i have been screwing with this damn d.s.l...hook up for a week...finally got it goin .. and now all this music to catch up on..

listening right now...the begining harmonies sound a-i-c- cool tho...the guitar break in the beg is fucking sweet..
this has a A-I-C...meets nine inch nails meets...pink floyd vibe..lol..actually sounds just like . well you..!
that "underwater" guitar sound is great.....well i can see that you already have tons of "useful"..info on this so ill just leave it at that...

nice job
