Unless you want to record those one things... oh what are they called? Oh yeah... Drums. And those other things where someone stands in a room and sings... oh yeah, Vocals! :)

POD and samplers will only get you so far, but if you want to record a rock 'n roll band get ready for a surprise. Most rock bands don't like using drum machines, and most of them also like to have vocals in their music.

I liked the emphasis on acoustics too. The equipment issue is a matter of personal opinion and preferrance. Personally, I'd rather use a computer to do things I would only dream of doing otherwise, and who cares if can't sell it later?? If my computer works right now to do what it needs to do, why won't it do the same in 10 years? And by then I'll just buy a new one. The point is, you can do things with computers only the pros can do in their million dollar studios, for that alone recording on a computer is worth it. And "don't buy computer programs"?? I chuckled a bit when I read that :) I think if this guy had put as much time into learning about computer recording as he did into learning how to use the analog systems he wouldn't have said that. Sure, programs aren't tangible objects, you can't sell them when you're done with them, but just listen to what we can do with them! I can replace racks of equipment with a $400 program called Sound Forge 5.0! :) by the way, it's here!

Wrong Brian! But wrong the 'other' way. Get a large Neve, SSL or AMEK 9098, a couple of 2" Studers ...... and you still won't be able to do half of what you can do on a good DAW.
I've done a 100% turn-round within the last 2 years, from being a totally committed large format console / 2" tape person to fully digital. The minute I discovered that high quality converters and accurate sync clocks can make digital sound at least as good as, if not better than analogue, I firmly closed the door on analogue.

Now, if I have to work in a studio with a large analogue set-up, I have my pro tools rack with me to do all sorts of stuff that would take me forever in analogue, or worse, a lot of it is almost impossible in the analogue domain - unless you want to start making copies of tape and cutting and glueing tape together!
 
I think you mis-understood my point because you said I was wrong and then reafirmed the same point I was making.

I don't know if I just said it badly, but I was saying why computer recording is a good thing. It's because there are less limitations for the "home studio." We can do things now we were only dreaming about doing before.
