Hi all,

I am moving within a few months and finally I will have a room that I can entirely use for my music! So now I am wondering how I can improve the acoustics in the room as well as soundproof it a little. I know both things aren't exactely the same, but I want to find a balance. And off course, I don't have a lot of money.

I never had many experiences with soundproofing/acoustic treatment, so here are a few basic questions:

1) the local 'do it yourself shop' sells acousitc panels consisting out of polyester foam, with an 'egg' pattern. Do these things really make the room dry or are there better solutions in the same price range?

2) What is the exact use of Rockwool? It isn't very expensive I notice, and I read in this forum it can help to make basstraps. Does it also help soundproofing the room. For example: Is it helpfull when I treath the walls with rockwool bbefore I put the acoustic panels on?

3) What difference is there between rockwool ans glasswool?

thx!

Brett

1. They only work on the higher frequencies. The better alternative is Rockwool or Rigid Fiberglass.

2. Rockwool absorbs sound to reduce the reflections in the room. To soundproof a room you need mass and an airtight seal. There is no quick and dirty way to soundproof an area. About the best you can do is make sure the room is airtight as possible.

3. I'm not familliar with Glasswool but I'm guessing it's more like regular spun fiberglass insulation. If that is the case then it's not as useful for sound absorption as the rigid stuff.

thanks Tex

I'm gonna try to make a few acoustic panels myself, because it has to be non destructive (it's a rent house) and I'll try to air seal all the opnenings in the room...

I'll do a search on acoustic panels ;)
