Learning, always learning
I've got a newly acquired Studiomaster 16x8x2 mixer and have it pretty well cleaned up. The only thing that bugs me is the adhesive residue from where someone used one of those old school label guns to label the channels. What is a safe way to get that off without messing up the face of the board, namely the stock lettering?

One more for you guys. Tascam Model 15 vs. a M520. The M520 is newer right? There is a model 15 for sale in my area but I'd really like to get my hands on a M520. Am I being stupid or what? Also, the model 15 weighs something like 400 lbs doesn't it? I'm just trying to figure out what I can fit in my house that won't need a crane or special equipment to move it.:D

I usually use iso alcohol to get adhesive residue off...the 91 percent stuff. At least with all the gear I've cleaned up I've not had a problem using it for that purpose. For the really stubborn stuff I've even had to take a small piece of rag practically dripping with the alcohol and set it on a patch of goo for a couple minutes at a time and then scrape with my thumbnail, set the rag back on it, etc. to break it up. Or wiping with the alcohol-soaked rag in one and hand and then a clean dry rage in the other alternating wax-on, wax-off style when it seemed like the alcohol was just pushing the adhesive around instead of picking it up. In any case it didn't mess up the finish...my M-520 had tons of that label machine stuff on it when I got it. So, try it out in an obscure spot first, but that's what I use.

Yes the Model 15 is approximately 400lbs...the pres are transformer type. It is not as flexible as far as routing goes as the M-520. The strips are individual modular plug-in type which is neat. I've got some hi-res pics of one somewhere around here including closeups of the strips. I have no idea how they sound compared to the M-520. How much they want for it? MAKE SURE THE POWER SUPPLY AND CABLE IS WITH IT. :)

Thanks for the sticky advice. Once again you come to save my ass!:D

They are wanting $600 for it and it does have the power supply assembly, plus a manual.

What's different as far as the routing? I can't really find any really good photos of the model 15 or M520 to compare the layouts. All I know is that the M520 looks freakin' sweet!

Well, here. Take a look. It looks like it needs a good cleaning, maybe a little more so than the Studiomaster that I just picked up. Let me know what you think.

If the alcohol doesn't work (and it won't on some adhesives)...something as simple as vegetable/cooking oil will work...you just rub with a little oil on your finger or Q-Tip.

Then if that also doesn't work...I've used silicone spray many times, though in rare cases, silicone CAN eat some paints or silkscreened markings...so, try it in a corner before you dive in (again, using just a little on your finger or a Q-Tip)...
…but I've never had a problem with it.

There's also a product called Goo-Gone, which looks like an oil based product and there are generic spin-off versions available at places like Office Depot.

They work decently at dissolving the glue and not eating up the lettering on the panels. They also get applied with a q-tip or cloth, make you wait a few minutes for the oil to do it's thing, and then you wipe it off with a clean cloth along with the gunk.

Cheers! :)

I have used the goo gone but not for gear. That stuff does wonders. I agree with Sweet about the alcohol, it's always worked for me.

Goo Gone

I was just about to mention the Goo Gone... The stuff works great! :)

You spray a bit on the stickers and let it sit for a while. It soaks in and the stickers will peel up. If the sticker is one of those shiny-coated vinyl ones, you can peel off the the vinyl layer and then spray Goo Gone on the residue left behind. It gets off sticker goop and other gunk/marks.

I've never used or seen a Model 15 in person, but the M520 does have a lot more routing and features than the Model 15. The Model 15 is pretty early in Tascam's mixer evolution. If you find yourself wishing for a M520, then maybe hold out for a while and keep on the lookout for one. One will come up eventually somewhere by you, (i drove from Chicago to Detroit to pick up mine). In the meantime, see how the Studiomaster works out, fix it up, and when a M520 comes along you'll be ready to grab it. :)

wd40 works on most goo... spray the rag and rub... dont spray it everywhere...
