Your machine has three heads. Going from left to right,
ERASE HEAD
RECORD/SYNC HEAD
REPRO HEAD
Each track has the ability to monitor either the input, the repro head, or the sync head. Hitting the Simul-Sync switch on a track switches the middle tape head from RECORD MODE to MONITORING MODE, which allows you to listen to the track from the middle head. This eliminates the delay issue while overdubbing.
Overdubbing is achieved by setting all of the tracks to Simul-Sync mode, except for the track that needs to be overdubbed. That track should be set to monitor the input, and record-readied. (Note that is IS POSSIBLE to monitor this particular track from the repro head while overdubbing, but that causes a delay, which is undesireable when everything else is being monitored from the middle SYNC head.)
SO step-by-step:
1. Listen to the tracks, and find EXACLY where in the music you want the punch-in point to be.
2. set all the tracks (except for the track about to be overdubbed) to Tape monitoring, and SIMUL-SYNC. (RECORD SAFE!!!)
3. Set the overdubbing track to monitor input (because the artist will most likely want to HEAR what he is playing while it is being recorded.) and record-ready it.
4. Give yourself some pre-roll, play back some, let the artist do his thing playing along, and hit REC-PLAY right at the punch in point. Note that you won't be able to hear the old stuff on this particular track while you're doing this. It will still be there, right before you punched in. You just can't monitor from the SYNC head and hit record. It cannot switch the head's mode like that.
hope that helped -- Happy tracking!
