The Manual and Tascam web site has nothing to say about connecting to a computer.
I have ordered a SCSI-2 card for one of my computers
PCI expantion slots.
I have not connected the 788 to yhe SCSI port on my computer.
I am concerned that It might not be compatble.
I don't want to do a smoke check on either one of them.
Has anyone performed this approach to to SCSI issue.

I'm writing from memory but I don't think you're supposed to do this. I think the 788 and PCs are incompatible. I know for certain that you're not supposed to connect any CD burner to the SCSI port on the 788 except for the approved Tascam ones (and the three TEAC drives they actually use) because of firmware issues. I think its the same with PCs.

According to the old Tascam BBS posts, all the "in the know" folks *strongly* advise against this. I don't know the "whys", but apparently if you do this, there *will* be smoke!

Here's the answer from the Tascam FAQ:

- Can I use the CD Recorder drive that is inside my computer with the 788?

No. If the drive is inside your computer, then you cannot connect the 788 to it. In a SCSI chain, there is one controller, and then a series of SCSI devices. Both the computer and the 788 will want to be the controller in this situation. This will freeze the SCSI communication line, and can cause data loss on the drives connected. Do not attempt this.

The FAQ can be found here.

CDW512-S Direct w/power supply

Ok bought a CDW512-S.
Will connect it direct to the 788.
Will run an extention from the 4 pin connector
from the computer power supply or
build one from scratch.
1 amp 12v transformer
Bridge Rectifier
2-4700uf Electrolytics
2-LM317 voltage regulators
one set at 12v
one set at 5v

Hows that sound?
Gotta be a way around this.

The CDW512S will run direct with the 788. It's one of the three compatible TEAC drives. To run it you need an external case to put it in (if you haven't already got one), a power cable, the right SCSI lead, and probably a SCSI terminator. You should be able to get all these dirt cheap on Ebay.
