$50 Nady Bass Drum Mic?

***Edited, see below***

I'm looking just for something that will sound better than what i'm using now (SM58) on bass drum...sad I know. I don't want to spend much, and see that Musicians Friend has like $50 bass drum mics from Nady. Is it worth it or would i just be buying crap. I don't care who makes one...I'm just not ready to shell out $150 for a mic i'll almost never use.

FYI: Here's the last recording I did using the SM58 on the bass...

I'm also using 1 SP B1, and 1 SP C1 as overheads, so it's quite the hodge-podge. It's also my first time really recording drums. Let me now if you have any advice other than getting better mics, engineer, or drummer.:o Thanks for the help people!

A 58 should actually make a good kick mic. You might have to do more EQ and compressor work than with a good kick mic, but it would still end up similar in sound quality. Besides, even if it wasn't a good kick mic, it would probably be better for just about anything than any Nady mic used on its intended application lol. I would avoid a $50 Nady kick drum mic like the plague.

yeah, your right...i'm and idiot. it's NADY not NANDY...

You're gonna find that pretty much anything from Nady is crap. Seriously, you'd be better off waiting the few weeks or months or whatever until you could afford to get a real kick mic. But really, that 58 shouldn't do too bad...

hmmm...okay...that's pretty much what I thought would be coming my way. couple questions then...are there any "cheaper" mics that might do a fairly good job on bass drum?

Also, if anyone's tried it, where'd you put that 58 on a bass drum? I only had a few minutes to screw with it when doing my take, but I wasn't very happy with the sound I got with it...I EQed the crap outta it!

Audio-Technica Pro 25. Less expensive verison of the ATM25, one of my favorite kick mics. $69.95, or upgrade to the ATM25 for $140. If you upgrade from the pro25 at some point, it makes a great floor tom mic.

The pro 25 will do you fine. You can even use it to mic a bass cab. Check Musicians Friend. I think they are doing a $49 closeout.

Electro Voice 664. Weird but true - its my primary kick mic right now and it cost me 35$!!! It will also look cool sitting out on a stand somewhere when your not using it ;) There are 2 songs (anna clip, and before) on my website link that feature that mic on kick...

Well, you ARE going to have to EQ the crap out of it, regardless of where it's at. First of all, what type of kick sound are you going for? More of a boomy or resonant sound or maybe a sharp attack with a good bit of click from the beater? This will help determine where to put the mic.

i'll have to 3rd that. i got mine cheap on ebay, not expecting much, i just wanted a kick mic for when i needed it. it really shocked me, takes eq and compression very well when needed, and it can be pretty versatile.

I have a Pro 25 and I love it. Not as thumpy as a D112 but for the price tag it really does the job.
If you want more thump get an ecm8000 and put it in on the other side of the kick drum

ah...interesting...thanks Enchilada.
It's funny what because I got that idea from this bbs. I read in some thread (can't remember where it is) that I dude did a mic test on his kick drum with mics that really shouldn’t be used on a kick drum. The ecm8000 had the most thump.

if you dont pick up that PRO25 for $49, you will be banished forever from this forum.......

actually, i think it's like $69.00...then you've got shipping and possibly tax... so it'd probably be closer to $85 or so... :o
