Ok, another song. It's a little more up beat than my usual. Check it out if you have the time. As always critism and comments much appreciated.

Song Title: All That You Want

Any Al Stewert influence on your vocs? I heard hints of it in spots. This is easily my favorite of the 3 I've listened to. Love the verse. Love the chorus. Love the solo. What's your signal path on the snare, BTW?

The only comment I have is minutae: I'd like a half second or so leader so I don't jump out of my skin as soon as I press play ;).

Yeah I agree, this song is one of the best I've heard from you... great lead guitar work!!!

I listened to it with headphones and thought everything sat really well in the mix. How'd you mic up the drum kit? Because I could here crashes panned left and right but to my ears the hi-hat and ride were both dead center. I always like to hear each one slightly panned... what's your philosophy on this? Do you prefer both in the center?

Damn! I really liked what I heard Emeric, but I only heard it up until 2:46 !?!?
For some reason I am only able to download the first 2.6mb of the file! I tried 2x, and at 2.6, my machine thinks it is done. I think I just missed the guitar solo, it felt like it was coming right about the time it stops!
Really liked the sound and feel of what I did hear though.
How do you record acoustic guitar? I really like that sound!

Brad

my bad. Double post.

pglewis: Thanks for the d/l. I don't recall listening to any Al Stewart, but who knows. The snare is a sm57 through a mackie into a an Aark 20/20+. Bit of timeworks reverb and waves compression and eq.

Cooperman: Didn't notice that the ride and hi-hat were dead center. Will have to listen again, maybe I messed up or the mp3 encoder did.

Brad: No idea why it would bomb out after 2 mins, I moved it all to I-Drive today. Maybe it will work for you now.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

This one, as they say, rocks. You're doing so many things right here, and like some of the others said, it's your best so far. You understand composition - how to put bits together without getting bogged down in symmetry - like the acoustics with their chords at the beginning and that extremely satisfying electric solo at the end. There are bits I want to hear more of (the acoustic picking at the beginning, skittering understated electric chords at the end), and that means you're doing it right. You're singing better, too. What would happen, I wonder, if you put some of that electric solo feeling into the singing?

Hang onto that drummer.

What did you do differently with the sound on this one, compared to the previous one?

Cooperman: The tamborine tends to bring everything to the center. In the second acoustic punch part, the hi-hat is in the center because the snare is gated, and only being picked up by the overheads. Micing for the drums - 2 overheads, spaced configuration. Snare, kick, tom, floor all miced.

Dobro: Thanks for checking it out. Man you write some pretty detailed review. I can't say exactly what was done different on this one, these songs are all over a 11 month period so I can't remember. I'm just getting down to mixing them, and fixing up the odd track.

Emeric, nice tune, geat mix. You always get a nice sound with your drums. Im gonna come knocking on your internet door one of these days to get some micing and placement advice since I now have a pretty decent kit to use. We got it for my daughter last year and she's been taking lessons but its the guy thats giving the lessons I would like to use for some tracks.

The chord progression sounded very similar to one used in one of The Hand Merchants tunes, but went in another direction. I really liked that arpeggio picking where the tone sounded like "Dear Prudence". Great job.

Emeric liked the tune - has a Grapes of Wrath feel to it (That's a good thing)-- Where's that back-up singer you had on the last tune or was it the tune before -- anyway a back-up singer might add another dimension to the tune (maybe or not) the guitar lead was right on the money...........Salutes from a fellow Canuck

jeeze...I loved everything about it...best vocal yet...there's a lot of intimacy in this song...I don't know how to describe what I mean....like you felt really into it or something I guess, and it showed.....there's a fine line between cranking out a tune or projecting a vibe....you definately made the vibe match the song perfectly...great feeling tune....gibs

The Al Stewert tune you might have heard is "Year of the Cat".

My path on the snare is very similar, except the sound-card. My problems must be some combination of mic placement, tuning, and EQ. I'm not getting that nice snap your snare has.

Hi Emeric

This is Fantastic as per usual, nice airy mix
and a lovely solo, very professional, very professional indeed :)

Man, I just got done listening to this one and this thing sounds great, no shit!

You do sound a little like Al Stewart, I never noticed it until someone said that, but it's true. I think the music reminds me of Jeff Buckley a little. I don't know why, but there is a moodiness about it that reminds me of Buckley. Particularly in the chorus.

I didn't really notice the cymbal thing, but I'll listen for it again.

Vocals sound great. Really everything is right where it feels like it should be. I'm very impressed, I really am. I wish I could be a little more constructive, but it sounds so freakin' good already.

Wow, very nice! Esp. acoustic guitars are very well played. A few picky thoughts--

Drum fill at 1:05 seems to pan the toms left when convention would have them going from probably centre to right.

Bridge at 1:40--I expected a change here but it slipped back into the earlier sound. Maybe add one new instrument--rhythm electric or vocal harmony to add new interest at this point. The final part with the electric leads really tops things off perfectly. Great to hear stuff of this quality!

One other thing--I did find the bass a little shy--but it could be my system as well. A solid bassline running under acoustic guitars can really sound downright awesome.

Tapehead: I guess I have the toms panned a little wide. The second chorus could use some variation in the background, but with acoustics being so busy, I didn't think I could fit anything else.

I wish the bassline was more solid, and stood out better. This is a symptom of not being a bass player, and using a pick, and probably not eq'ing it correctly. As well the strings could be changed someday.

Layth: Thanks! Drums are a bitch. Any advise I can offer I'd be happy to, but every situation is so unique with drums. Some songs I have the drums sound ok, but others are so-so, mainly because the mic's are relocated for every song, so consistency is not a strong point for me!

Drstawl: Not sure if I've heard that particuliar Hand Merchant tune, what's the title? I listened to some of the other stuff and liked it.

Coda-Co: Hey, thanks for the d/l. Not that familiar with Grapes of Wrath. That backup singer couldn't make it for this one :)

Gibs: Thanks! I appreciate the kind words from the top MP3 clinic mixing clinic reviewer. :)

pglewis: Guess I should check out this Al Stewart guy. I know I've heard his tunes but can't bring them to mind. I was recording a demo for a band here last week, and the drummer had this little 12" cheapo Dixon snare. Man did it sound good, very snappy - not a piccolo either - I'm gonna get one, only about $150 Canadian.

Tutton: Thanks for checking it out. Appreciate it it.

Cmiller: Glad you like, looking forward to more of your tunes.

Mutt: thanks man!

Thanks again for listening.

Nice mellow vibe...I like the quick accenting
arpeggios.

Excellent expressive guitar solo...

Is this your vocal??

Nicely presented...I really enjoyed it.
