4/4 Rock Song in A minor

Blistering guitar work. Intriguing poetic lyrics. Five star homerecording. Looks like Sluice is at it again. :)

I'm not sure if the reason I like this so much is because I've heard lots of your other stuff, but I think not - I think it's because it's a great song and I love the muscle and sound of it. The way it sways between the muscle and that staccato arpeggio bit is magic. You're getting better and better at this. If it weren't for the lyrics in this one, the way it moves could almost be described as swagger. That's the magic - it's ironic. The music is so confident and muscular, but the words are gut-wrenchingly bitter. When you get around to doing the video, here's an image: you with a pile of cleanly-washed towels, folding them neatly and stacking them up for your mom.

And you talk about *Sami* raising the bar. Damn. I don't care - I'm gonna post a song here this weekend anyway. :D

I'll listen again later when I get the studio up, but it sounds good thru headphones.
 
i think i might have said this the first time around but that electric guitar hook is cool as shit!

no mix comments. listening on the worst setup available.
 
Well done dude, You got a lot of stuff goin on there. Overall there's a sound that is familiar to me, but I can't put my finger on it. I like the song. I think the vocals work well with some of the b/g's you got in there. Guitar work is tight. Recording is very clean.

p.s. the cymbal splashes stick out to me, and a couple vocal lines at the beginning seem like they could use some evening out or a bit of compression or something. Other than that, it's beyond me...

What can I say. VERY tight. Great sound over all. It's easy to dance to and it's got a good beat. I give it an 83.:D
 
DAMMIT!!!!

I just wrote a bunch of responses to you guys, and it got deleted when I opened up Sonar for some reason. GRRR....It took me about 20 minutes and I have to get to work. I'm hoping it will suffice to say thank you to all of you for the responses. Everyone had something useful to say and I appreciate it! I'll try and respond again tonight after work.

I think I found the crackling/"clipping"!!! It's in the bass track. The time codes Chad gave me really helped me narrow it down with headphones. I'll have to redo that track, but at least we've found it. It's most noticable around the snare because the snare is so noticable I think. So Chad, thanks for giving me specifics. When I've been mixing a lot, general "I hear some crackling" usually just make me dizzy. :) Thanks!

if you ever leave portland (which is a very cool city imo) and move to chicago, make sure to drop a line. i'd love to jam together.

Geez..............no freakin' wonder I never post anything anymore. All my stuff sounds like an old doddering dinosaur compared to this........the only way I get to play on anything this cool is when you or sam or G. get me to play on your tunes.

Great song as usual........I don't hear a problem with the snare......probably my old doddering ears........signature sound on the vocal arrangement.......very nice lead work......

Hey Sluice -- Great riffing at the beginning. I haven't read all the comments here, so I may repete something.

I really like your vocals on this. You have a great "Hard-Rock/Heavy Metal" vocal style that I noticed before, but now that I can listen in hi-fi really shines. Very cool. I also like what you did with the bass on this tune. Are you still experimenting with the bass sound? It works really well on this, especially during the quieter moments.

The only (small) complaint I have would be the samples used on the drums, but that is minor. Would love to hear this with the real stuff...:)

Toki987- As a builder by day, I appreciate the structural steel comment. :) It's interesting to me how much I apply certain patterns of operation/behavior from work to my time in my "studio." I only wish I could scrap one role for the other. I also appreciate your taking the time to listen to the words. I know words fly over the heads of most, but I try to never say anything frivolously in a song, so it's nice when someone's listening to the thoughts and questions now and then. Thanks Toker.

Erichenryus- Eric, that part is even more fun to play than it is to listen to. It just feels so good on the fingers. And squeezing those high notes at the end of that opening theme is so nice to do. You should learn the riff...it's therapeutic! :) Thanks Eric. Oh and I'd love to come out to Chicago. Maybe Jeff Marcomb would join us (he lives there too), and we could play "Why Are You Still Here?" with real drums! wOOt! :)

By the way, some time before the summer is over, I'm hoping to re-do one of my first recordings- a tune called ]Townie that was in my very first thread here. I've got kind of a vision for it already and the vision includes a shitload of your sax. I'll be going for a live club-without-an-audience (which I guess would just be a sound check? ) feel. The song was just about going out on the town with friends and drinking all concerns away. Pretty easy to relate to. :D Oh ya, thanks checking this one out, you old doderrer, you.

boydrj- Thanks a lot. I'm hoping to one day replace all these fake drums with the real thing, even if I have to hire someone. But there's always been good drummers around my area. I may be getting to that point soon. Thanks again!
 
Snare

I dropped a new snare in there and fattened the guitar leads a bit if anyone has a couple minutes. Struggling with this snare thing, but this one sounds more alive to me... Thanks!

Is the snare panned to the right or am I nuts?

Hmmmmmm, I liked the other snare better, I think (but I've overwritten the previous file so I can't check it anymore). This snare seems to be a bit separated from the rest (perhaps it's just panning)
 
Ya know, Tjarko I didn't notice it when I changed it (about 2 am), but now that I'm soloing it, it's definitely leaning to the right for no apparent reason. The track isn't panned, the effects aren't panned, the buss isn't panned...Just a bad sample I guess. Dammit.

My kingdom for a snare sample.
 
I know the frustration of finding drum samples. What about buying or renting a snare, and making your own? Or maybe layer it in with your other sample. Or play the snare to the track.

Just some thoughts.
