4/4 Rock Song in A minor

I'm hearing what people are saying about the snare. Some instances are around 1:20 and 2:35 - leading into "to hear the difference". Also right at 4:35. My best guess is that it's reverb because the "clip" seems to immediately follow the snare, not right on the snare hit. I'm also guessing it's reverb because it's just a sound I hear sometimes with my "Realverb" plug-in. I know that you spend a lot of time adjusting the pre delay. Maybe you set it too fast (or too slow - I don't know much about pre delay).

Guitars sound great. Kind of a humorous yet sneaky sound to them. If I ever don't say "great song, great production", it's only because I forgot. Great song, great production by the way.

Sorry your return from vacation was rocky. But hope the vacation was good while it lasted anyway.

Fprod South- I appreciate the comments. I'm not hearing any clipping. HOWEVER, I am wondering if it's the loud cymbal crash that's right there after the snare you guys are hearing. I just listened after reading your post and I've cut it back a couple db's. It was pretty loud. I didn't update the MP3 or anything, but I suspect that might be what's being heard. Thanks man.

I'm liking the new backbeat and cymbal crash on the main figure. New vocals... smoother... more sung, lest forced... new lyrics "won't your life have changed, when your eyes open"...

Are you using a dynamic mic on vox? Must be... the "s's" sound close to what mine get like on an SM57... almost like "shh" instead of "sss".

Kewl new leads after verse 2!!

The drums have a meaner, more kick-ass attitude and groove... for sure... and the leads definitely put more emotion into the mix. The vocs are doing a job, as well. (A good job)

Really intricate mix. The little peaks of lead guitar here and there sound very natural and fit this familiar song like they belong there.

As far as recording quality... it's top notch of course... but I can't help but think there's just one small veil of hiss in there... possibly in the vocal tracks... that slipped by in the opening or something... could be on the cymbal track, too... one of those things that you're not concious of when it happens. Oh well... could also be that I'm hearing poorly too. (Gotta get this room soundproofed... well... get all the boxes/junk outta here first... then the monitors...)

it's definitely not a crash and it isn't as bad on this version.. probably because you raised the bass.. .. I might not have noticed it so much if you posted this version first.. everything sounds great although things seem a little more bassy now... not bass guitar but almost like there is excessive bass on the guitars.. at this point I'm probably just looking to bust your chops! bottom line, it sounds great to most people..

hmmmm....I don't think it's the crash. (I meant 4:25, not 4:35 BTW. oops)
The more I listen, the more it sounds like a very quick dealy that's only apparent on the loudest hits, not so much a "clip". I'm just being nit picky (and curious). It really doesn't detract from the sound.

Do you improvise your guitar leads or write them? I always like your leads.

ok...I'm not going to hound you on this... but consider this...

the rhy gtrs are fairly important... so you doubled them up.. They become fairly prominent in the scope of things.. Seems normal...ok thing to do.

The lead vocals get doubled... or harmonized. It helps to thicken or add to the melody line..whatever.

The bass is there...not that it isn't so important...but because of its low freq, is usually left mono... ok so far...

drums... so many instruments in a kit, and since you're probably dealing with stereo samples...hey...keep them in stereo, right?...plus it's kinda the norm and DOES sound better anyway (at least to me 99% of the time)

WHY>>>WHY is your lead guitar bathed in mono ambience? Is the lead not important? You don't get off on leads like this VanHalen nut here?... Certainly track count isn't the issue or the "abnormalness" of stereo mic'ing a crank gtr.

But..when vocals drop, blah, blah.. The lead guitar takes center stage... put it in a realistic setting and at least give it a stereo "image". To me, it seems like the energy of the mix drops when this happens (goes to mono). Make the solo take off like a rocket, and as Emeril would say "KICK IT UP ANOTHER NOTCH!!"

NO INTENTIONS of sounding like the jackass this post makes me sound like.. The only way I know how to put it.

If you're referring to the heavier sections, it could be because I'm screaming my fucking nuts off, with little consideration of my esses, spitting everywhere, pissing neighbors off, general Rock stuff. If you're talking about the verses, it may be the cut around 5k I gave to all the vocal tracks. But I should try my 57 on a vocal track just to see what kind of contrast I can get.

While I'm waiting for Sam to get off the phone, I should also tell you I almost used two mics on the amp like I do on a lot of my leads. For some reason I thought wide leads would blow this. I should have done it and sent them to separate tracks to keep my options open. But still, I've got a few little tricks up my sleeves when I get the time. I think I can get them to a good place. Rather than post it again here, maybe I could send you the mix privately when I (eventually) do it (which I will because I'm obsessive) and get your opinion? Thanks for the push.

lots of structural steel in this one. Its solid.. I heard the snare thing on 3 hits. It sounds like just a strong velocity thing kinda like a the crack of a whip but it sounded cool on my system. I really enjoyed the warm guitars and voice. As mixdude said, the solo could be flamed up a little and even feedback the gibsons on something with as solid a bed as this. I even listened real close to the words, very good story. Over all level was smooth, and had that across the waters sound. Was like listening to some Tull, kinda, but signature Sluice..

I like the guitar riffs that happen before the choruses, the upward slides. Well actually i don't want to limit that to just that particular riff, i like all of the guitar work in this song but that was my particular favorite.

Cool song,although I don't feel it's as accomplished as your other material.Leads a tad loud near the end,but excellently executed,great guitar tone.Vox is KILLER!This is kinda heavy all the way thru.Dramatic heavy.Vox is my favorite part .Snare is beat,but maybe only cuz you mentioned that you were looking for a new sound.Wicked hats.Nice finish.

I'll have to go back and really listen carefully a few times... it's like something happens that you're not concious or aware of... but you know something happened... something caught my ear, but not my attention...

Okay... listen to the cymbal decay... the first cymbal decay in the whole song... there it is... (this is just because I'm assuming your reverb is good and not "grainy" like that)... it's that grainy, sckrrrch sound.... and I think it was in there later too... or it could have been something else...

Whoa... just skipped past it... around :52- :55... something in there...

Oh... it's right there about 1:00... right before "Is that what a friend is...?" (one of TripleM's faves...) a pop... right before the two "hits" and then the verse. Could be a .wav that got sliced at the wrong spot, or something.

Damn... it's like psychedelia... drugs or something... you start to see the colors... the wallpaper waves hello... a splinter sticks in the subconcious... and you're not even aware of it...
