Hi guys. I did a quick recording of this song about a year ago as a test for a new Bher...ehem....a new Bhhaa...a new mic. I thought I'd try it again while it was in my head. I definitely felt the song more this time around too as it's been a rough return from vacation. Truck damage, bill collectors....you know the grind... Oh and the "mic" is for sale. :)

(EDIT: This version is done with a newer mic.)

Any comments, neg or pos, are welcomed and appreciated. Also, if you've got a link to a high quality snare sample you'd like to clue me in on, feel free! ;)

I'm also interested in which if any of the guitar rides should be dropped or replaced or traded for beer.

Did you find the song dull, interesting, or neutral?

Thanks so much!

Tom

a "quick recording" a year ago???

you're such a punk. :p

Here I was gettin' my hopes up that this was gonna be a new song, and then I'm like... "wait a minute, doesn't he already have a song named Fold"... and then I listen to it and I'm like... "wait a minute... this is the same some that I've had in my HR.com playlist since the beginning of time"...

:D

You had me fooled, though. :p

I thought it sounded decent the first time around... I'm sure this version will be better.. (I love those guitar "chunka"s) :D I'll take a real listen when i get home...

WOW.. Nothing bad to say bout this one..

Very well done in all of its complexity!
I think the mic actually sounds fine..

Thanks Scott. I should clarify that this is a different mic. Apparently I'm not speaking English today. I'm editing the original post. Thanks for listening Scott!

Oh and sorry WATYF. I've got a few ideas going for new stuff, but I've gotta get the challenge collab going. I just wanted to use this to warm back up with after vacation and try some things out. Hope you like this if you liked the other. Thanks man.

maybe it's me, but that snare sounds like it's clipping in some spots.. not always, but I hear it happening mainly on the heavy parts, but it's not every hit.. It's like a crackle every time it's at full velocity or something.. could be the mp3? or my speakers.. see if anyone else mentions it... it's just the snare..

Other than that it sounds great.. I can't hear the bass but it doesn't sound like it's missing.. I must be going crazy because that crackle is very noticeable to me and no one mentioned it..

some nice vocal moments!

I'll be back..

Don't sweat it man... I'm just bustin' yer balls. :D

It's not like I have any room to talk... I haven't submitted anything new in... well... in... er... I dunno... let's just say it's been a while. :p

It's the old rhythm guitar tracks I think, Sam. I wondered how noticable it was. I can re-do it in about 20 minutes...just needed to see if others heard it and how necessary it was to set up again. Thanks.

dude

don't redo anything until other people hear it! Don't take my word on anything..

for anything..

at anytime..

ever!

:D

ah man...and I turn around..and now YOU"VE got a post up here. I have to hear this...but I am getting so hungry... must eat ...must eat...

I swear...songs been up 5 minutes and already 57 replies!!!

man...I hope you smell like trout!!!!

later...(Chomp, chomp....)

and how the fuck am I supposed to get a revamped tune up here if you heavy weights keep playing hooky and posted this stuff on Fridays...?

sounds cool to me. I don't hear anything wrong with the snare...my my system is CRANKED... no clipping...I don't think... and what is wrong with sound.

honestly, I don't even listen the snare much in these kinda songs. It is so vocal and gtr dominant, that is what I tend to listen to anywaz.. I like the rhy gtr sound alot. the lead sounds too mono to me. needs some stereo verb/ambience to it....or stereo mic it..whatever you want to do.

there is a lot of nice stuff in hear...but its the rhy gtr that takes the cake for me.

vocals nice and clear. So...what are you using...one of dem fancy $300 Chineese mics:D

Actually it all sounds good...chink or not.

I kinda put you and sabb in the same boat, that I really like the music, but I'd love to hear some "normal" stuff that I can tap my toe to!!...with some KICK BUTT< MOVE OVER> WHOMP SOME ASS guitar leads

oh..my freezer was out of trout. I suppose your's is full?:p

welcome back... I've kept the shit stirred while you were gone...
but certainly nothing worth talking about as usual!!

You know what I like? It doesn't matter what style you choose, it's always instant SLuiCe, Tom! You should really try to make a reggae tune sometime ;)

I like this, especially the guitars. It doesn't grab you by the throat as some of your other songs do (I haven't of course paid attention to the lyrics yet, maybe it's different when I do). But if you place between two of those throatgrabbers it might be just fine.

The rhythmic parts during the verses make me wanna play along...really cool. You play them very relaxed and groovy.

Solo guitar at the end is brilliantly played.

7-11-03 Mix 1...

I don't like the snare sound. Sounds like it's clipping even though it probably isn't. Maybe it's a combination of the snare and the hihat. Kinda dirty sounding hats. Not a big problem, though. This is NOT a radio song, but pretty basic on your standards. Your riffs are so YOU. There's certainly a style you've been having for a while now and nobody else hasn't thought of it yet :D Good song. I like your vocal delivery, so much feel. I dig the rhythm guitar tone. And... put a little more kick in the kick drum (and forget what I just said, I always go overboard with it :D ) Mix is pretty good but the song itself is better. Make the last little solos louder (see, I had to come up with something :D )

-EDIT-

...ok, after looking at the other comments I saw comments about the snare. Maybe my ears WERE right :D It might be the velocity thing Sam mentioned.

New MP3 posted if anyone is interested.

I retracked the guitars. I'm not sure if I mixed them right, but the tracking is MUCH MUCH MUCH better this time around. But I could be wrong about that. I'm untrustworthy.

I also brought the bass up. Hopefully it doesn't get too muddy, but I agree the actual bass notes weren't being heard well.

Sam- The snare is definitely not clipping, but the guitars were definitely crackling. It happens when I have my external cd burner on...chared resources or something. I got off my lazy ass and re-did those guitars. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Also, let's get into some Q3 tonight eh? I'll email you.

mixmkr- hehe...this is the same mic I've been using since December. SP, and yea it's Chinese, but I don't spend much time in the mic forum, so I'll pass on the debate. :) And man, I cought some really nice trout and some really nice places. Made coming home really hard. Cheers man!

sloop- Gave it some bass.

Pedullist- Ya, this is definitely one of my simpler songs, but sometimes I like to just march along and step on things, if you know what I mean. Thanks for the comments!

Crankyone- See post to Sam about "clipping." Also, unless you're going to tell me where you got your snare samples, you're restricted from commenting on mine. :D Oh and I brought those leads at the end up. :) Thanks Cranky.

I gotta work on my collab before Al kicks my ass, but I'll definitely save any suggestions.

Retracking improved a whole damn lot. It already rocked, but now it überrocks!

Mix is better too, no lack of high ends there... ;)
