388 counter screwed up!!

The counter on my 388 is running backwards! When I hit play or record, the counter goes into the negative, and counts backwards, while the tape plays/records forward. How could this have happened and is there a simple fix? Thanks.

Do you have the tape running over the tach counter or UNDER it. If you thread the tape UNDER it, it will count backwards. This is the far righthand roller just before the right hand tensioner. Check it....its a common problem.

The tape should run over (on top) of the tach wheel.

that did it! i sure feel stupid. the first time i'd ever done that...
