Between being and nothing
Well, a new build of N-Track was released on Valentine's day. Found it last night, d/led it, installed it on my refurbished laptop loaded with W2k, and marveled how purdy Flavio made all the buttons look.

THEN I pressed the record button.

After years of happy satisfaction and stability with this product, I was disheartened to find that the damn thing kept crashing on me!

Over, and over and over again!

Eventually, N-Track froze so many times, my laptop literally took a "phyisical dump" on me. Poop all over my motherboard! :mad

On top of that, some buttons are missing! I can no longer test the soundcard that I chose. How am I supposed to know if the soundcard I'm using is any good?

After the "dump", I uninstalled 3.0.3 and reinstalled 3.0.2. I've already informed Flavio of my issues, but I thought I'd let you all know of my experience, and ask if anyone has gone through the same issues with the new build.

Thanks all!

check out the N-Track message board...

www.n-track.com
then click disscussion board..
then go to the first board.

read the post about 3.0.3 - you'll see that everyone is having the same problem...haha - so Flavio DOES know (i assume). Post this there, i'm sure it could at least help him figure out the problem(s).

I went there and did as you suggested.

I read about one guy there who did a clean install of the new version of N-Track and he said it worked just great.

Maybe I'll give that a try this weekend and see if that works.

dont get too excited yet

yes...but dont get to excited yet. Other users who tried that seemed to still have no such luck as to getting the program to work good again.

Lucky for me it worked fine in the first place!

Again, I think you're seeing machine variations.

I'm using 3.03 Build 1248 and I'm having no problems.

I've been upgrading over my original purchase since 2.01 but then I'm really careful about what other software I put on my PC. A clean install couldn't hurt.

The clean install worked

Well, I dl'ed a fresh copy of 3.03, build 1248. Uninstalled my previous copy of N-Track, installed the new one, inputted my registration numbers, and I'm going to town now! I'm especially having fun with all these free dx and vst plugins that I archived from long ago and am taking out to play.

My only problem now is that my WDM drivers dislike my midi files when I do the convert to wav file thingy. I could switch to the MME drivers for this function, but they tend to munch on the processor power! yuck!

It's also such a bother to have to restart N-Track and import the wave file, just so I could use the WDM drivers.

Oh well, at least the damn thing is working again...

Thanks all for your help and suggestions!

I've been using 3.3. What I notice is that ntrack becomes very unstable if you mix 16 and 24 bit files in the same song. So if I have to use 16 bit files, I'll convert them first to 24 bit.

I'm a little bit upset about the changes Flavio made to keyboard shortcuts. I'm used to fine tuning volumes and pans with the arrow keys on my keyboard. Now, I have to hold down the shift key before the arrow keys will work like they used to - very inconvenient.

I also find the new button colors cheezy.

Other than that, general problems I've had with the last few versions of ntrack are :

1 I have been getting occasional freezes when using high power plugins like RVerb and ReverbX - but that may be from bugs in the plugin rather than in ntrack.

2 It appears that sometimes ntrack records a bad .wav file. Then every time I try and open it with anything, my computer crashes.

I think the last stable version of ntrack I used was 2.3 . But I've also changed my hardware since then, and that may also be an issue.

I really think that the user should be able to set his own key-shortcuts. I have no idea if it would be possible or not, but it would be very cool. I would say, set all the transport buttons to those on a keypad, then just use a keypad for recording w/o having to mess with the mouse or whatever. Also, it would be sweet to be able to use some kind of jog wheel to control where the track plays from. Just a couple of little ideas to make life easier for some of us...

Well, scratch that.

I just went back to 3.0.2 again.

I tried to do some recording today. At 16-bit, everything was hunky dory. However, when I tried to record at 24-bit, the software froze - EVERY SINGLE TIME!!

I'm a registered 24-bit user. Screw this!!

I'll wait for 4.0 to come out, and Flavio has fixed all the bugs and put in all the suggestions before I download any more versions. This is ridiculous!!

i understand everyones complaints...etc. - but tell flavio! lots of complaints here, but you guys should do something about them - post any serious bugs, etc. on the ntrack board.

I know this isn't what you want to hear...but I rarely upgrade n-Track anymore. I mean I do the big ones, and I watch the features list to see if a revision contains anything of interest to me, but most time they don't. If it ain't broke don't fix it I guess. I'm still running 3.0 and am happy enough.

Slackmaster 2000

I think the features list isn't that good an indication of whether to upgrade. I think alot of times Flavio fixes bugs without mentioning it.

slack and bd...i think both of those are good points - however i'd have to agree with slack. I mean, if everything I use ntrack for is working perfect - i usually dont upgrade until i see a useful feature...

Well, I see from viewing the forum that Flavio has found a solution and will be posting a new revision tonight.

I'm looking forward to some new features, myself. I could use some more MIDI tweakability in that prog.

Well...

I've downloaded 3.0.4 and I'm ready to install. I'll be back with a progress report.

Wish me luck!

Hi,

Well I came here to find out about the new versions offered since 3.0 which is what I'm running.

I think I'll follow the old rule....If it ain't broke don't fix it! I don't use midi yet so there is nothing that looks like anything I need right now.

3.0 is running smoothly for me and right now that is good enough!

Thanks,
Rusty K

My laptop bit the dust during my trial with 3.0.4.

Gonna try out the new version with the new lappy tomorrow.

I'm with Slack and the others still running 3.0 with no problems. As far as using keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse:
record=0
play/stop=spacebar
rewind=backspace
insert wave=ctrl+1
loop=shift+ctrl+v
plus windows conventions like ctrl+c for copy and ctrl+v for paste. There are a bunch more keyboard shortcuts in the help file.

Well...

After some tweaking, all is well with me and N-Track and my new lappy (Dell Inspirion 8100, 1Ghz, 384MB, 30GB hd). I had some crashes post install, but they were mostly due to the unstable driver I got with my new soundcard (Digigram VXPocket v2 - I promptly upgraded the driver from their website). I got even got it to record in 24-bit with no problems.

Haven't tried the plug-ins yet, but I did have a LOT of problems on my old Lappy with the Room Machine reverb plug-in. Which was a shame, because, when it DID work, it sounded really swell.
I'm thinking it might be a processor/ram issue, so I'm going to try it on my new lappy and see if I still have issues.

I also can't seem to run my copy of VSampler and N-Track together (MIDI driver issue? They just don't seem to like each other), tho' VSampler and my copy of Powertracks Pro get along like a house on fire (tho' Powertracks pro is a 16-bit proggie - I wonder...hmm...).

Anyway, I'm probably giving out a lot more info than I need to. Let's just say, the damn thing works!! Thanks, Flavio!!

P.S. Thanks, Tom. I keep forgetting about the keyboard shortcuts.
