250 dollar budget, decent guitar to learn on

well....

if you can't find a good mexi strat or tele, look for the Squire series affinity, you'll pay around 160$s, then take the rest and save for a set of GFS pickups ( matched bucker 54$'s), or spend on a good tech to set it up for you. the cool thing about the squire is they are good guitars to begin with, and you can always upgrade them, a tele has to be the easiest guitar to upgrade....i got my son an Affinity tele for Christmas and he hasn't put it down
 
well, now that I'm back at school (a much bigger city than my home town with many more guitar stores) I went looking around here at some local shops.

Throughout the day I picked up and played several guitars from teles, to strats, to LP's.

What I've learned is that i deffinately prefer the humbucker sound over single coils. So that has fiven me more of a starting point.

While in one shop I picked up an Ibanez artcore AS73.
I'd walked past it several times but never picked it up becaues I didn't think I would be a fan of the hollowbody.
But after picking it up and playing it, it was all I could do to keep from walking out of the store with it. If it hadnt been just a little over my budget (it was 299) I would have bought it then and there. I tried offering the guy 250 cash but he said 299 was the lowest he could go but he might throw in a gig bag.

someone above mentioned they had and artcore and I was just wanting some input on it because I loved the sound. It has two humbuckers, 2 volume and 2 tone nobs. And its loud enough that I could even practice without an amp so no worries of bothering the roomates.

what do you all think of this?
 
I would still check out the godin radiator its a cheap but amazing guitar so is the Exit 22 you can get these guitars for very cheap and they are well made.
 
I spent today going to every guitar shop in town and playing every guitar I came across in my budget.
In the end I walked away with a used Epiphone g-400.
The finish is blemished in a couple places but nothing too major. Also the two volume pots were a little noisy. The guy had it marked 200 and after showing him the noisy pots, I talked him down to 175 and he gave me two pots to replace the two in it.
I'm pretty happy with it so far. the neck is smooth and straight. Action is great (no fret buzz and easy to chord).
Its probably not the absolute best sounding guitar I played but I figured with the money I saved I can use that extra 75 dollars (and save up a little more if needed) to get a nicer set of pickups.

all in all, I'm quite satisfied and am looking forward to many many hours playing this baby.
