I like a lot of the guitar work. The lyrics kind of remind me of some kind of "Boys are Back in Town" parody, though. All in all not too bad.

Real nice guitar work on this. On my computer the vocals sounded a little bit hot and too out front...The drums sound like they could use a little bit of a boost. Maybe the mix just needs a bit more of a balance between the instruments and the vocals.

Not a bad song though, especially for a first post!

:)

Did you ever see the movie Boogie Nights?

What are you recording on?

The recording sounds dull and sort of inconsistent. that fade out on the lead was horrible.

The vocal is sung badly and the lead is killing me.

The drums and bass sound alright in comparison.

Not my thing I guess, but it's your first so I'll have to just leave it at that.

Never saw Boogie Nights, I know I should have by now

this is done on Cakewalk Home Studio

I would really like to be able to correct the dull and inconsistent elements you refer to....in what parts of the song are they most obvious, where I can start with?

thanks

Great attitude!

The dullness is an overall thing. It's worst on the guitars to my ears. How did you record them? Try getting a great sound in the room before even thinking about recording.
Are you recording through some old rehersal room mixer? It sounds like the signal is not making it all the way to the harddrive intact.
The inconsistency I was referring to is the way the fades are done and the sounds chosen for the parts. The lead is weak and really digital sounding but when it comes in and leaves it's like "FADE HERE". The rythym sounds like a bad modeller. It almost sounds like the early days of digital recording, what soundcard are you using?

The mix is a problem but the vocal is sung horribly off on the high notes. The vocal style is not my thing but it could be sung a lot better.

As a matter of fact I had re-done all the guitars on this compared to my old version (nobody's ever heard) . I miked them instead of going direct. Different combinations. Marshall with dynamic, condenser, different guitars, real doubling vs. cloning. I guess I was overcompensating on the vocal levels because it seems like all the amateur stuff has the vocals too low. The singing quality is another issue...
My guitar sounds and levels started out really dominant and then I had the idea about the vocal levels and you heard the result. The guitars were supposed to be warm and growly. At the moment I am unable to push the guitar amp so thats an issue. Working on an isolation box-thing now.

My soundcard is an Edirols UA-5.

Thanks for the ideas

How close are you positioning the mics for guitars?
I try to get as close as humanly possible. I've even removed speaker covers to get that close. Try to spend a lot of time on mic position. Listen and adjust until it gets thick.

To maintain the realism of the guitars try to have two always playing instead of one lead piping on all of a sudden.

I think I need to simplify. Everything.
I think 2 guitars is enough indeed. This thing has 16 guitar tracks. And of course finding a more natural singing voice and a real melody.

I have a question about Nowhere Radio: I wont' be able to hear this until I get to my super fast connection at work but in general does the service make accurate plays of the songs? In Hi-fi mode that is?
Thanks

Most of us download then listen and the hifi is untouched.

16 tracks of guitar is waaaay to many. Two should work, if not something is wrong.

Simpler is almost always better IMO.
