My setup atm is a Laptop and a EMU 0204 DAW.
As my laptop isn't the most powerful, I want to use external effects units(mainly reverb and delay) to save on cpu usage, sound etc. How to I use the effect unit during mixing? Meaning how can I affect a track with an effect after it's been recorded...
The only way I know how to mixdown, is by line out of my 488, into the R and L inputs of my Audio interface. Listening to the song till I'm happy, then just simply recording it into a program all at once. I avoid recording each track individually because of latency BS. Whilst the the whole...
a bit off topic i know....
I plan to record to tape, mix down in to computer. I've been doing this with my 488.
problems I've had...
Latency! If I record each track separately into the computer, I have such a hard time, lining up the tracks to make timing like it should. Even if it's a mille...
The 388 is close by, I just wouldn't know what I'd be looking for. £200 too expensive sweetbeats? I asked around yesterday, and was recommended a guy who specialises in analog gear repair. He can service mixers and reel to reel! :)
He used a tascam 424 to record his first solo album 'niandra lades'. He used a 488 to record demos for the album 'shadows collide with people'. He later then posted them online.
If you have no idea, on how to fix the usual problems with a 388 that I seem to be reading about. And no idea where to go and get it fixed, should I avoid buying one?
There's one on ebay atm, which I think I could get for around £200. The user claims he's owned it for 6 yrs, and has only used...
Yes I do find out what was used. Nearly always, big expensive 2" tape machines. Expensive vintage consoles. Recorded with a team of people that knew what they were doing, in a lovely studio. Doesn't really help me does it?
John Frusciante's latest album...
The Empyrean's a handmade record. It...
I'm the same, i doubt I could tell. Though the albums I do think sound fantastic, when researched upon always seem to be analog.
Whats put me off buying a Mac, is listening to friends or young bedroom 'producers' music. It sounds so crisp and clean, and basically everyones recording ssounding...
modern albums I love the sound of, that were recorded on tape.
John Frusciante- The Empyrean (I read no computers were used at all, it sounds phenomenal)
Radiohead -In Rainbows
Devendra Banhart- Cripple crown and Rejoicing in the hands.
I've decided to buy a reel to reel recorder, and use a computer for mixdown..editing etc.
I know this a question asked all the time (I searched through 10 pages on this forum for info, but not really relevant to me) Anyway...da da DAH...which recorder to buy? :)
I can't afford a lot, I 'd say...
This is a nice segment from a 'sound on sound' article on a Studer A-800 emulator plug in.
Do We Still Need Tape?
When talking about analogue tape, people tend to get a glow in their eyes and go on about how much better music sounded back in the day. Recording on tape certainly makes a...
If nobody wants to record to tape anymore, maybe there's a valid reason? Why are we still debating digital vs analog? If tape were superior, surely we wouldn't settle for a computer, just for the ease of use etc? I still see the romance in recording analog....maybe it's just BS and should wake...
I still want to upgrade from tascam 488, to a reel to reel. Only problem is that I see/read that most machines need repair or are partially not working. I have no idea where to go to fix these problems, or how I would do it myself. Many tascam 388's are showing up these days, but are always...

I want to 'upgrade' from my tascam 488. What would you guys go for next? I want get away from cassettes to actual tape. Any fairly priced equipment recommended? I was looking at a 388, but they seem very rare, and I keep reading how easily they break.
thanks
