    upside down mic position question

I've posted this before. Not so much to do with the current style and benefits of hanging a tube mic upside down, but the original reason happened because if the Telefunken U47. The M7 capsule in that mic was made from poured PVC, which basically started drying out from the moment it was poured...

    Any suggestions for mics?

I prefer the ones that capture sound and convert it to electrical signals. The other ones...not so much.

    Mic and console for rap

Be careful man. You gotta be sure to buy a special "rap mic". Buy the wrong thing and you'll end up sounding like you're singing. I've recorded rap with the wrong mic where whole words went missing.

    Microphone upside down??

Funny how my opinion changed in the last 5-6 YEARS, Richie. I now DO own quite a few PVC diaphragm mics, Richie (presumably you've heard of Siegfried Thiersch)... plus I know the full back story of the U47 and the heat issue vs. the PVC diaphragm, which, as I said in the OTHER THREAD just today...

Having your Condenser Mic UPSIDE down.....

The first mic ever hung upside down was the Telefunken/Neumann U47 and it was hung upside down for a reason. The M7 capsule in that mic had a diaphragm made from PVC, which starts drying out pretty much as soon as its poured. The diaphragm cracks like a spider web and becomes brittle and starts...

    Apex 435 mods, anyone?

You should also hear a difference in the shrillness of the high end. That really adds up with multiple tracks.

Talk me out of getting a Shure SM7B

I would never let anyone talk me out of an SM7B. As a matter of fact, I should get one.

    broken mic!

There's a way to do this without solder, but it can be kind of expensive. What you want to look for is conductive epoxy, also called silver epoxy. Like I said, it can be expensive.

    Small vs. Large Diaphragm

Typically the rules are: Small/medium diaphragm mics are better for accuracy, LDC's tend to be more forgiving & musical the larger the pressure gradient is (and the transducer type). A bunch of variables influence that. Transformer vs. transformer-less (more/less coloration) and the components...

    M-Audio Sputnik

Seems to me when they describe the capsule as being somewhere "between a U47 (dark) and the high end of a C12" that means it could describe any standard Chinese capsule. Big bottom, but bright. Having both qualities doesn't mean "do all". Certain mics are dark or bright for a purpose. Most...

    Which Sticks Do You Use?

Yeah, I played oak sticks when I first started out for the first 8 years out of 29 years. I'll never play oak again.

    Capsules

This is fairly easy to deal with. I know that a real K47 is OK with about 60v for polarization voltage, so you shouldn't have issues with the diaphragm being sucked into the back plate if that's what you're getting. (of course, depending on where you're measuring.) If you're getting too much...

    Capsules

I'm hoping to sample a couple of those soon. Dave said he only had 4 in stock. There's a great deal of difference in the ones Dave has vs. the other K47 style we've seen. Dave actually sacrificed a couple of real Neumann K47's to be duplicated, and from what I've seen of the return metal work...

New Bargain "Pre-Modded Tube Mic" For The Soldering Skill Impaired...

If I had the dough at the moment I would love to have one of these mics to evaluate. I think the whole premise is correct. A pre-modded mic for those who want better, but dare not venture into DIY.

How a Vacuum Tube Is Made

I'm not that sure anyone needs to. What was so magical about the VF14?...no one seems to be able to explain. It had "special oxides in the filament" or had "a unique sound by under-heating the filament" as far as I've heard, but still...it was just a vacuum tube! It was a pentode wired as a...

    CAD M179 on sale

Something is scratchy. Could be the XLR. haven't messed with the switches yet. It does seem more like a dirty contact or a bad connection. The weird thing is a noise when I touch the basket (or mount) and the grill at the same time, gives me a hum. Could just be a ground wire, but if I open it...
