They only time I do not use one is doing scratch tracks for ideas. Anytime I want to do anything with a final written version, even acoustic versions, I use one. It just makes everything more cohesive for me. Especially because I usually record acoustic and vocals separately.

I agree with the post above. The snare will not sound good tracked unless when you hear it in the room you think, "that sounds amazing." If you ever play with a drummer who knows great drums/tuning, you will understand this. Again with the muddiness, it could be tuning. If you are looking for...

Dude, I would take it as a compliment that people think it's samples. Alot of pro records use beat detector and samples mixed in so heavily to make pro drummers sound like that. Also, I think the drums sound great, very usable, especially for B8 crashes...I know, I've had to work with them before.

Mainly just a little less OH and more individual mics. If you are recording each mic to separate tracks, maybe try a little limiting on the snare and kick to fatten them up? Not sure if that would help, just mess around with it until you like it!

Dude, I think that sounds really good. My only complaint is that the individual drums need alot more presence. The kick is maybe the best, but the snare especially sounds really washed out. I'm assuming you are premixing a stereo track for the drums, so that means using less OH and way more...
