So which instrument do you record first?

I'm sure a lot of us are mutli-instrumentalists or at least like to think we are :p So my question to all of you is which instrument do you track first? Do you do a a sort of a scratch track, record/program a drum track and then record the "real" parts playing along with the drums? Or how...

    Are all DAWs the same?

I've been using Pro Tools for a while now, about 2 years. But there are some things about Pro Tools that just annoy the hell out of me, such as the elitist/exclusive nature of the software and it's limited compatibility with a lot of stuff. But from what I've learned, the only difference...

In the market for a drumset... any advice?

I feel that I have a need to learn drums on account of them just being awesome and fundamental to music, among other things. That said, I am totally new to the world of banging things, and as of such, I am looking to buy a drumset. Preferably a one stop shop set that's got decent cymbals...

    How do you pronounce DAW?

This seems like a silly thread, but I'm curious as to what people call Digital Audio Workstations for short. I've always pronounced it Daww, as in the beginning of D'awesome. But I think in my neck of the woods people call it Dee-eh-double-you more often. So how do you pronounce DAW? :D Poll up.

    Amplitude vs SPL vs "loudness"

I have a few questions; it's at the point where I am not even sure what to ask, but here goes: There are several kinds of amplitude, like peak, peak to peak, and RMS... But are any of these amplitudes equivalent to sound pressure level? If so, how are amplitude, SPL, and subjective loudness...

    Jazz big band mix

Hey everyone, Here's an old school assignment I did last year. My recording teacher supplied the raw tracks for the class to mix. I decided to have another go at it... Let me know what you think of it! The mp3 file was too big to be uploaded so I had to cut out the second half so it would...

Absorption/calculating room modes of non rectangular rooms

All the room mode calculators I've seen assume that your room is a square/rectangular shape. However my room specifically is more of a weird L shaped room. As far as my knowledge of room modes is concerned, the distance between any two parallel walls will create a "mode" at a frequency with...

    Routing/connecting help

I've been interested in recording for little over a year now; I've learned a lot, but one thing i can't seem to wrap my head around is this routing business. I've devoured countless books on the subject and read words like AUX send, BUSS, ADAT and what not but I've never fully understood what...

    Stuck at square 2

I'm at the end of my rope here- I can't seem to get my fireface ufx communicating properly with PT9. My interface and monitors can playback the demo session that came with pro tools, but when i try to record something, the fireface picks up the gain from the mic, but pro tools doesn't pick up...

Pro Tools 9 Compatability with OS X Lion?

So I'm new to recording. After many months of research, I compiled myself a list of gear that I would get. Two of these things are an iMac and Pro Tools 9. I learned recently that iMac has updated it's operating system to OS X Lion. Yesterday while buying Pro Tools 9 at my local pro audio...
