Routing/connecting help

I've been interested in recording for little over a year now;

I've learned a lot, but one thing i can't seem to wrap my head around is this routing business. I've devoured countless books on the subject and read words like AUX send, BUSS, ADAT and what not but I've never fully understood what it all means.

Is there a book or a link somewhere that will explain this to me in plain english?

I'm planning on making a career out of engineering and if I don't know what this all means... well I think you can all connect the dots.
