Value of LoCut filter on mics?

This may be a dumb question, but what's the value of a low-cut filter switch on a microphone? Seems like you could just record the full range and then use an equalizer to reduce the lower frequencies as needed.

Favorite mic for acoustic, especially violin?

This may be too obscure a question, but do you have a favorite mic (or combination of mics) for recording acoustic instruments like guitar and especially violin?

    AT2020 versus AT3035

Is the AT2020 just the AT3035 without the 80Hz switch and the 10db pad switch? (Oh, and black instead of silver.) My mixer already has a 80Hz cutoff so I'm thinking I could save $100 by going with the AT2020 instead of the AT3035.

    Advice on the second mic

I recently started recording as a hobby and am recording acoustic guitar, violin, piano and occasionally a string quartet. I'm using an AT3035 and an old microphone (I think it's a Sony ECM333 condenser with a battery in the mic, it works but I have trouble with it). I want to use two mics to...

    Advice on improving first recording

This is the first recording I've made of my daughter playing fiddle. I'm looking for any advice on how to make it better. A couple of things I've done already: 1) Boosted the high end - the mic I used is a Sony ECM330 which I got a couple years ago and rarely used. I've since upgraded to a...

    Removing squeeks and pops

Any advice on removing transient noises? I have a recording of my daughter playing a rapid fiddle peice and for some reason (I don't know what she was doing) on some of the runs there's a brief squeek. I've been able to reduce it a bit by using the parametric EQ and sharply attenuating a...

Split Stereo track to two Mono tracks

I'll admit from the start I'm a beginner with Cakewalk, so there's probably a simple way to do this but it's just not coming to me. How can I take a stereo track (say I recorded an instrument using two mics) and split it into two separate mono tracks? (So that I can process them separately.)...

Best connection from Mixer to LineInput - RCA or TRS

Getting my home recording studio set up and am not sure what cables to buy. What's the best connection to use from the Mixer to the line-input on the sound card? I seem to have a choice between RCA pins rated at 316mV 600 Ohm output impedence OR TRS jacks rated at 1.23V and 150ohm output...

    MIDI Instrument Definitions for Roland

Okay, I'm a guitarist and computer geek but have little MIDI experience. I got my son a Roland RS-70 (similar to RS-50 but with a disk drive, sequencer, & USB). I found the RS-50 Instrument Definitions and loaded them into Cakewalk Home Studio XL. Assign a track to the RS50 definitions. But then...

Blue 8 Ball vs. Audio Tech AT3035

I'm buying my first proper microphone for home recording of violin, acoustic guitars (classical, folk and Dobro) and occasionally a piano. I'm debating between the Blue 8 Ball (the black one - not the blue dynamic) and the Audio Tech AT3035. I don't find many ratings on the Blue - apparently...

    Mic placement for Violinist

Anyone have experience recording a single violin? What's a recommended microphone placement(s)? Above or straight in front? Close enough to hear the bow scrape or back off a few feet? Thanks.

    MR8 - do i NEED a mic preamp?

I'm thinking about buying an MR8 just for recording (violin, guitar, & piano - one at a time) and then transfer the files to PC for mixing. I need something portable so I'm thinking to use either dynamic mikes or battery powered condensers (like Audio-Technica 31a or 33a) so that I don't have...

Set up Home Studio - Fostex MR8

Well, I WAS planning on setting up a home studio centered around my PC but then realized what a horrible recording environment it's in (too much extraneous noise and the PC itself is noisy). What I'm thinking now is to get something portable, like the Fostex MR8, and self powered condenser...
