The New Tone Thread

Alright, finally got around to doing a quick recording test of this new guitar. Only compression on the tracks and a limiter on the master. For this one there is some sort of high pitched whining going on there, Im not sure where its from exactly because I cant really hear it in Reaper but can hear it on the mp3.

And one of distortion. Can anyone point me to a good starting point for eq'ing this? I cant tell which frequencies to add or subtract or even where to start. I usually just play around with it.

Liv_rong...
I like the playing in this tune. It seems to have a lot of low end content for a guitar part. a little flabby but not too bad. I think the high pitched sound in a ring and is magnified by the slap back delay effect. I'm not good at pin pointing eq frequencies by number, but I would say it's probably above 3k. I usually raise each eq band until what I want to cut screams out at me....then I cut that frequency way down.

Pretty cool clips Liv....I like the clean tone best out of the 2, but I probably would've liked it even more if it had the tele twang...The od/distortion clip is a bit boxy to me...

A frequency I seem to cut a lot is around 300hz on quite a few of my tracks...Dunno if it's my cabs, speakers, guitars or just me, but I usually seem to make a narrow cut around 300hz or so, & it takes some of the boxy-ness in my clips away...Easiest thing for you to do IMO is slap an eq on the track, make it a pretty narrow q, boost it about 10db, & sweep back/forth until you find the offending frequencies, then cut 'em out...

Liv, the tone in your 2nd clip sound familiar - I often use a narrow band 2db cut at 530hz to take the slight harshness out of the tone. That does sound really similar to what I get though.

Also, I got given a Ukulele on Friday - surprisingly fun to mess about with playing it.

well bummer ..... I was bragging on the tone thread being a great resource for people wanting to dial in tones and/or buy amps and especially if you want to look at Marshalls, look at greg's clips.
And they spent an hour going thru 100 pages or so and all greg's clips are dead links.

Since he uses dropbox instead of uploading, I suppose after a while they go dead.
That's a shame and makes the thread useless as a resource ... catch it fresh or miss it entirely ..... poopy .... I was bragging on it too!

Is Greg banned or something? 'cos he's still very helpful to people posting tones and trying to dial in amps when he is still around.

no he's not banned.
Didn't say anything like that ..... I said his clips are gone if you go back a few pages .... plenty of people have absolutely no interest in hanging around and chatting about these things.
I referred them to the thread as a resource they could read through and get info and I told them especially they should look for gregs clips since they were looking at Marshalls.
Those clips are gone ..... you can no longer listen to them.
I think that's a shame because there's no point in sending someone to this thread just to read it if gregs clips are gone.
I'm not sure how far back they start disappearing but if you go back to page 1000 or so, they're gone.

I'm not fussing ...... I'm just saying it's a shame.

I'd say Greg deleted those clips himself Bob....I use Dropbox too, & as long as you keep them in the folder the link points to, they stay there...More than likely, Greg needed the space for something else & deleted 'em...

I've got a bunch of his clips that I started downloading/saving instead of just listening, to use as reference tracks, but only started doing this recently, so I don't have a lot of 'em...I'll have a look & see how far back they go...

Edit: The clips I have of Greg only go back to about March of this year, & I know there were a bunch of good ones he posted way before then...He might have 'em saved in a project or something, dunno...

Yes, I removed all those old clips. They take up space that I need in my dropbox for other projects (I actually use it for more legit $$$$$ projects). I should just pay for an upgrade, but I just haven't. I have a hard time paying for things that are free even if the pay version is slightly better. Lol. Anyway, I never really thought of this thread as a library of clips, but I suppose that would be cool if it was. It just never crossed my mind to save all that stuff for later reference. I never imagined someone would go through it from the beginning.

Boob, please tell your friend I'm sorry my old clips are gone, but if I can be any help any other way feel free to give them my email.

In other news, I've been in Chicago the past four days at Riot Fest. Fucking Misfits. MISFITS! Oh my God, that was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. It was so awesome.

Damn Greg wish I would have known I'm right by Ohare I would have had you over.

I don't take pics of anything. My wife took some. I'll get hers and post them up.

I saw Bad Religion too. I saw a bunch of my faves.

Haha cool, but I wouldn't have had time. I flew in and out of OHare but I didn't ever venture that far west. I was on the go pretty much non-stop. My hotel was in the Midway area and I spent all of my time either at the festival or running around the north side and trying to avoid getting murdered on the south side. The only touristy thing I did was take the wife to that chrome bean thing and the Married With Children fountain. We did most of the tourist stuff last year. This year we avoided tourist stuff and hung with locals.

Ah, you lucky bastard. I'd give a bollock to see them. They've not been to Europe in a very long time. They're new albums is good too so I imagine its not too annoying when they play new stuff live... which reminds me - I need to finish my Along The Way cover.

They played a good mix of new and old. They played and sounded fantastic. I got a good look at their guitar rigs and knew it would kill before they even started. Plexis and a JMP, how could they not sound great? Their set time was inexplicably short though. I think 40 minutes? Jay Bentley bellowed at the end of their set "Up next, some band" and that pretty much summed up whoever had to follow them.

I also saw Descendents and NOFX were fucking awesomely awesome as always. Social D played the entire "White Light" album, which isn't their best album, but they did it great.

I also saw a lot of shit I didn't want to see...like Deftones. Holy fuck their music is garbage. Camping out for a good spot, waiting for Misfits, I had to endure some Deftones and goddamn I hate them. To me they are everything that's shit in rock music. Slow whiny heavy moody crap. Bo-ring. They were very good at doing their shit music, but their shit music is shit. It was torturous to sit through that shit. I just kept telling myself "Greg you're about to see the Misfits".

Ah, 40 mins - that's annoying. The Descendants must be really old now. Didn't NOFX do a cover of Hope by the Descendants? Or maybe it was Sprung Monkey or something, I remember seeing it on a surfing film in the early 90s. EDIT: It was Sublime.

I'm not familiar with the Deftones but given that you've called them slow, moody and boring and gone to great lengths to slag them off you probably think I'd like them! Cheers - I'll look them up! :guitar:

They're all old now. NOFX, Bad Religion, and Descendents come from the same time and place, though NOFX was just a bit later. Bad Religion was probably the biggest influence on NOFX, and NOFX was sort of a BR ripoff in the early days until they found their own sound. Both bands are great and still put out good, relevant stuff...though NOFX is way more entertaining. They're a bunch of clowns that play funny warp-speed politically incorrect punk rock. Bad Religion is more serious. NOFX never "sold out". Bad Religion kind of did in the 90s, but no one really holds it against them like they did with other 90s punk bands. Punk elitists respect Bad Religion. No one really respects the Offspring, Rancid, or Green Day.

Lol. Good luck.
