well ..... yeah, but when I jammed with him was before he was SRV. It was just a band named Double Trouble I believe ..... I was a regular jammer in that particular club so I played with anyone that came thru there if I was off that night.
So he was just a guitar player at that time, to me ..... yeah, he was good .... but I was mainly about showing off my chops ..... lol
So I didn't pay that much attention to him.
I remember he was kinda quiet ..... very friendly but maybe a bit shy.

She was dating Greg at the time so I was playing with several of the Allmans in the park in Macon Ga. and she was on the stage and generally hanging around .... she had Chastity with her too .... Chastity was a small child then.
Cher was cool .... basically just a hippie chick.
 
Not really listened to much SRV - he really didn't break in the UK. But I've just put Live at Carnegie Hall on at work. Its pretty good at what it is, but its all quite samey to me, probably 'cos I've just not heard much of this style of music. Just seems like the formula is a really fast scale run followed by a jazzy style chord - rise repeat.

EDIT: Its getting a bit more varied now.

I'm not a SRV fan that much.
It grabs people's attention when you mention you've jammed with him but I do find his playing pretty repititious and much of it sounds like recycled Hendrix to me.
I know that's sacrilege to his fans but even now I listen to him and go 'meh'.
Oh he had blues chops coming out the wazoo but blues kinda bores me.
 
Yeah, I'm 35 minutes in now and its wearing pretty thin. His clean tone is great though - I've never really paid much attention to clean tones - I've always thought they're much of a muchness. For the sort of music I like the clean tones are normally dictated by the effect being used.
 
Well, I've listened to his live album which is generally highly regarded. It was nice enough but I'm thinking and I can't remember a thing about it now.

Listening to Karnivool now... Greg would really hate this. Like Tool but even more arty

That's really cool though, that you guys have at least bumped into stars (or in Bob's case, actually played with or hung out with stars!).

Contemporary blues bores me as well. It's such a strict form that there's not any room for innovation, so by nature it's the same things over and over. There's a local radio show here every Saturday night (the Fish Fry) that plays blues, hop, zydeco, etc. If I'm ever in the car when it comes on, it's a quick reminder of how tired contemporary blues sounds.

totally agree .... sure ... rock and roll often has the same 3 chord structure but it ...... well, it rocks!!

Oh and that gawd awful modern country music.
I can't turn the radio dial fast enough if I accidently happen to land on it.

Easy listening elevator music is better.

Not any room for innovation?
To play good blues guitar you have to be pretty creative and Inovative because...
It's just a 3 chord 12 bar blues format....you HAVE to go somewhere on guitar man!
If you don't have pretty good chops and some soul it sounds corny and contrived.
Many blues guitar solos sound very anemic because of the lack of innovation IMO

That's just it...every possible combination and permutation of notes to play over a 12-bar blues progression was exhausted by about 1955 or so. It'd all been done by then. There's a reason that blues evolved into jazz and rock. Blues guys were sitting around and someone finally said "I'm getting bored with this 3 chord thing. Let's play a 4th chord" :D

Hey you got a thousand pounds handy? You should go do one of Crimson Guitars build courses. You can build your own Nickleback guitar from scratch and they'll walk you through it. Seems fucking awesome. If there was something like that in the US, I'd probably do it. Well, not the Nickleback part.
 
speaking of guitar building. What happened to muttley? Is he banned or still butthurt?

Seems like a strangely out of context question... But at the moment I don't have spare bean. Hence building my own cab this autumn instead of just buying one.

I'm actually not interested enough in building to do a course. They're nice guys down there and it would be fun but I'm only really interested in the science/mechanical bit of guitar building. The arty bit which generally involves hours of sanding, shaping, oiling etc. I just don't think I have the talent or patience for.

Measuring shit up and working out where to saw things, drill things or screw things and I'm fine.

Ugh... Nickelback.

I'm the same way. I don't care about wood grain and oils. I'd just sand it enough for paint and paint the fucking thing. It's kind of the same when I was building racing engines. I didn't want to work on the cars, or even race the cars, and never would I do any bodywork. No way. Sanding fiberglass? Pure hell. I just wanted to build the engines. That's where the badassedness happened.

But anyway, I'd do the guitar course if it were available to me. Seems awesome, except for being surrounded by british people. :D

I know what you're getting at now as it just popped up in my YouTube feed and I'm listening to it.

Its actually a very interesting way of getting a new guitar as I am still after one more; I've made friends with my Ibanez and Washburn again though so its slipped down into third place behind a new cab and new head.

The other problem with it is the leave from work - its a certainly a strange way to take leave from the office.
