The New Tone Thread

Its not bad as such, it just stands out. I'm in the office listening on a pair of hard-shell Senns. When you've got a vocal over it you probably won't even notice.

It's supposed to stand out, but I think if it sounded better it'd stand out without standing out awkwardly. It's just not tuned great. It's got some weird overtones in it. I knew when I was banging on it that something wasn't all the way right. I think I'll EQ a little and drop it in the mix more. I'd guess that's about 60/40 close mic/overheads and no EQ, so there's room to improve it.

I love the floor tom, I'm kind of neutral on the rack tom. It's not great, it's not terrible. It's just mediocre. I always hear worse toms on better recordings, so fuck it. I could EQ/compress a deeper tone out of it. It's got nothing on it right now. I don't think I'll retrack it. Overall I'm good with the drums.

Today I'm tracking drums for four other songs, so I'll be retuning it for those.
lol
I listened to it and was gonna say I liked the floor tom sound a lot. Then I saw where JDOD said he thought it sounded weird. I'm driving to work and listening on my pickups alpine stereo. JDOD'S comment made me check my tone settings. hahaha
Everything is set right and I think the whole thing is killer man! It's just a well played and we'll recorded tune that rocks.
Especially the floor toms.
great job

Ah, well I know next to fuck all about tuning drums. I used to just kinda turn mine until they were about all equal torque and had a bit of bounce in them. I normally muted them too though 'cos I never had them set up in an environment where I could just hammer on them for ages without getting complaints so I would just play in 1/2 hour stints a few times a week.

Equal torque is not the right way. They sell drum keys that act sort of like a torque wrench, but that's the wrong way to tune a drum. Congress should ban those things. What if one lug is dirty or has some crud in it or something? The screw might feel like it's tight enough, but it's the additional friction from crud that's making it seem that way, not the actual head tension. Lug torque means nothing. If the head is situated correctly, the lugs should be pretty even, but it's not a given. Even head tension and pitch are all that matters. You might have one lug tighter or looser than the others. Doesn't matter.

I'm guessing my resonant head has gone a little bonkers on that one rack tom. That's what it seems like. I'll check it today.

Well, hopefully one day I'll get back into drums and learn to tune them. Can't see it happening any time soon (in the next 10 years) though.

What instruments are you using to get all those sounds?
It's all keyboard .... Roland XP-50.

Jimi asked about the rain .... it's hurricane ..... ummmmm ..... well damn ..... don't remember which.
But it's the best rain I ever managed to record .... it was some small hurricane that hit Baton Rouge and I took a DAT machine outside and somehow managed to get a decent recording of it.
getting rain recorded is HARD!!

Now that is very very cool. Most people run from hurricanes. Boob is standing out there with a mic. :D

Which is why I let it proudly sit out there in front of the piece for a bit!

I know it's long for everyone else but I'm mixing and going, "Man .... that's the best rain I ever got!"
:laughings:

And also rain doesn't translate into MP3 very well ..... I had a higher rate MP3 that sounded better but it was too large to upload.
But the original 24/96 wave file (which is what i was listening to ) is WAY better ....

I used to be very interested in recording natural sounds ..... I have a recording of frogs in my backyard that's way cool!

:D

Here's what I did today with the Hallmark and Fat Pig pickup. Another demo from my bands' "influences" cover album. This one's my selection. I killed two birds with one stone - Chinese Rocks. A song written by Dee Dee Ramone, Richard Hell, and Johnny Thunders. It signifies my Ramones/Heartbreakers influence in one song. And my love for heroin. Not really. Well, maybe.

This one also has real drums on it where the others I've posted had ez drummer. I figured I could just bang this one out, and I was right. One take, the first and only take. Lol.

It also has layers and layers of guitars, which is rare for me. I'm usually a few rhythm tracks, one lead, and go kind of guy.

So this is today's fucking around session.
Chinese Rocks

Ha ha, awesome. Even more so since my band were talking about covering this last weekend! :D

Bob: Cool intro dude, sounds like a movie soundtrack, if what you uploaded is low quality, I'd love to hear the high quality track...

Greg: Wow man, sounds like an album cut minus the vocals...Pretty damn good all 'round...

Thanks Bubba and miner. :)

So I was gonna do a bunch of drumming today, but I had to go to the doctor. I've been getting these random nosebleeds so I went to see an ENT guy and he peeked up my nose and found a clump of blood vessels near the skin, like a nose hemorrhoid. Lol. He had to cauterize that shit with these toxic matchstick things, and lemme tell ya, that fucking SUCKED! SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED! It still sucks. My face is on fire, and not in my usual good looking dude kind of way. Now my nose is draining some kind of fluid. But it's not bleeding randomly anymore, so yay for that. So yeah. That's how my day has been.

But the wife is about to leave for a little while, so I'll soothe myself with cranked Marshalls. :guitar: :thumbs up:

Wow man, hope that isn't something serious about to rear it's ugly head there...FWIW, the only time I'd get nosebleeds was when I had done too much 'caine...Years ago, but it did happen a few times...:D.Hope you're doing ok dude....

I did re-amp those guitar tracks I posted the other day, but don't know if these are much better, I did manage to get the volume up a little, but not a lot....

I was checking my mail, & just by chance, my neighbor across the street was doing the same. She's lived there for a few months with her husband & 5 kids (holy fuck...5 of 'em), but they've really has kept to themselves. He's in the military & is gone quite a bit...She asked if I was the guy that played the guitar & I told her yeah....She apologized about the complaints, so come to find out, it wasn't the old woman I thought it was, it was this chick that had been complaining...But, she's got a legit reason (which made me feel terrible), she's got bone marrow cancer...Damn if I didn't feel like a low-life...I apologized to her several times, but I still feel like pure shit, this chick's trying to rest, is in the fight for her life, plus taking care of the house & 5 kids, with me annoying the fuck out of her on top of all that....

Needless to say, all my guitar tracks will be pretty low volume from now on, until I can find another place to live (which I've been looking for anyway)....

Holy crap, that's terrible. Yeah, don't be a dick. Let that woman die in peace. No badass loudness is worth making a rough life even worse.

As for me, it's nothing serious. Just some blood vessels got a little too close to the skin inside my stupid nose. They had to get burned shut. More of an inconvenience than anything serious. The treatment sucks ass though. But compared to bone cancer, I'll take it any day.

Yeah man, I feel like a total douchebag over this. I can only imagine what that poor woman though when I had the DSL crankin' over here...I told her if anything I ever did bothered her to let me know & it wouldn't happen again...The "C" word brings back memories of my Dad, & how terrible that shit is...

Good to hear you've got nothing serious over there man...

Ok, here's those re-amped tracks, pretty low volume, but they're decent I guess...I took Tadpui's advice on compressing the clean guitars, & it seems to have helped 'em quite a bit...

Signal chain:
Strat/SG > interface > re-amp box >EVH LBX>EVH GB> i5

Amp settings:
15w mode
Blue Channel
Resonance:........2-3
Bass:.................7
Middle:...............8
Treble:...............5
Presence:...........5

Gain:.................clean: just below "1"....dirty:....7
Volume:.............2 1/2-ish

WR Take 2

These guitars don't seem as scooped as the last version to me, lemme know what you guys think......

Damn Greg, that sounds awesome! I can't find a single thing to nitpick about that. Great stuff man.

I think it's better than the last one. Seems better anyway, going off memory. The clean guitars are better. I'm thinking the distorted guitars are better. Less scooped sounding. Still a little too much gain for my tastes, but it works. This does seem less "low volume" than the last one.

Do you have an internal room of that house that you can soundproof? Or maybe at least provide more isolation from the neighbors?

Damn Greg, that sounds awesome! I can't find a single thing to nitpick about that. Great stuff man.

Thanks a lot dude. What do you think of the snare? You mentioned you were using a Supraphonic sample. That's a real Supraphonic on my drum tracks. I think it came out real good IMO. I'm not wanting to ever touch the mic position again. :laughings:

Thanks Bubba and miner. :)

Oh man ...... ...... that sounds awful!

sounds kinda like a punk ailment though so at least it's appropriate

I always say that the main reason I don't post my music is that I do it for myself and there's nothing remotely commercial about any of it.

Here's proof .... this is something I did that I like a lot ...... you won't ..... but it's an example of what I like to do with my recording efforts.

There's nary a guitar

It's long

It's boring

You'll hate it

You have been warned.

(I had a slightly larger file that sounded better to me but was apparently too large .... it had more of the bottom end this thing needs .... ah well )

That's some good t-storm. How did you record it, especially without soaking your mics? If I tried that, not only would I ruin my mics, but all I'd capture is the pet door slamming shut repeatedly as my asshole dog ran in and out to figure out what I was doing on the back porch :)

I honestly thought that this was going to be a Led Zeppelin song, judging by the title.

Nice assortment of instruments from around the world. I like this, it actually reminds me of Yeasayer a little bit. Good sounding synths, the breathy attack on the pipes is really convincing. I like the didgeridoo kind of bass instrument that's playing the upbeats. Nice groove, and nice mix. On my 5.1 system the bass seems OK. It could use a little more low-end balls I guess, especially with the percussion. Good job Bob!
