And those drums probably sound like shit 
To be honest, reso-less drums can sound half decent when closed miked, but in the room or even sitting there playing them, they sound like utter crap. Concert toms, those specifically designed for no bottom heads, sound pretty good but you have to tune them higher to sound good.

What mic are you using? A 24" Kik shouldn't sound like that. I think maybe your trying to get the click sound before it even hits the mic! Maybe lay off the all the dampening inside the drum and add some dampening to the resonant head....and also EQ it after you get a half decent sound.
