Recording Guitar Amp... duh!? :P

Ah yes, that's it. I guess the 6505 will do it just fine. Very heavy. What a horrendously shitty song! :laughings:

Look at that cab though. I think that's a big part of it right there. That aint no budget Crate cab. Those Mesa 4x12s are heavy duty and they usually come loaded with Mesa spec Vintage 30s - an equally heavy duty speaker. There's another 600-800 bucks for you to spend right there. :o

I don't mind saving up and spending the money. My worry is buying something that I end up not liking. Even a 30 day money back policy might not be enough for me. 6 months later I could end up regretting my purchase and losing money LOL.

That's one head I've heard a lot of in person, and it's never any good to my ears. Yuck. I personally think the 6505 is better.

I see. A lot of people say it's good for extreme metal stuff.

You're right. TOTALLY. Totally right, but... Just keep in mind that when you can't move the amp into another room being able to get that cranked amp tone at lower sound levels would make it soooooo fucking much easier. What I don't like about it is I'm not going for "METAL" tone man LOL. It almost kinda sounds like the tone in the video. The problem is it sounds too much like mega death and I want it to sound more like Carcass or something :P

That has to be a 5150. Sounds just like it.

This is what I will do. I will buy a LONG 100ft speaker cable, 100ft microphone cable and move just the cab to the back room. Then I'll order some parts from radio shack to build a ROBOTIC arm that will hold the microphone. I'll attach a web cam to the robotic arm at which point I can move the microphone around the speaker cone via remote control :P

This has been done actually. No camera that I remember though.

That's the risk with anything. GAS is a bitch. But I'm sure you'd be more than happy with a big ol honkin Mesa cab. They're pretty bad ass. If that youtube mess is any indication, the 6505 plus a Mesa cab should do the job in theory. I mean I know it's a fully produced song and all, but the tone is there. The rest is up to you.

Maybe it is. I played with a band just recently that had a XXX in it and it sounded like fuzzy assholes. Real thin and fizzy. Maybe he just sucked. There's another guy that uses one and he doesn't go for a real heavy sound, but his basic tone isn't all that great either. I tried one at GC and wasn't too impressed, but I'm not a metal guy. I don't even think about those kinds of tones. I probably couldn't dial that shit in even with my JVM which is more than capable of that style.

I really suggest you try like hell to find and play the shit out of whatever amp you're keen on before you buy. Maybe take a weekend road trip to Houston or San Antonio and Austin to hit music stores that stock stuff you might like. It's worth it. Houston alone has 5 Guitar Centers and 3 of them are very well stocked. If you come to Houston let me know and I'll show you around. I know every nook and cranny of this big ass city.

I forgot about that! I looked into that a while back. I remember it being like $600 or so from someone who actually built a robot for this. No, there was not a camera attached, but I was seriously contemplating ordering one. Now, I may just have to look into it further...

Also: 5150/6505/6505+/5151 II all need vintage 30s like Greg said to get that sound you want. T75s/greenbacks/70-80s etc... just don't get it there.

There were crate cabs that came stock with brit made vintage 30s, but I think they were discontinued almost a decade ago. They were also labeled as such on the front with a small white badge in the lower right hand corner.

Thanks I appreciate that. It'll be awhile before I even buy anything. I have to look at it from two different view. Yes I want the best most monstrous tone I can get, no I'm not a rock star who makes big money LOL. So, do I need to really invest a small fortune or do I just need to get something that will do it's job well? Time will tell what which amp I end up with, but it'll be one hell of an adventure! :D

That would end up on my list of future goodies LOL

I will keep that in mind when buying a cabinet. Baby steps one thing at a time :D

I really recommend finding a used peavey 5150, 6505, or the +/II models used.

They are built like tanks so used shouldn't scare you off. They can be had cheap and they sound good for the sound you want.

In Flames, Devildriver, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Machine Head, Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend.

I'm sure there are more but all these bands have used that amp on their records.

The G12H30 and K/H100 will probably do well too. Like the V30, they're a stiff, loud, efficient speaker.

And not to confuse things further, but I believe there are three types of Vintage 30s as well. Or maybe there used to be? Maybe there still is? I don't know for sure. I've just read about it and heard the difference between a Mesa V30 cab and a standard V30 cab. There's the standard Vintage 30 that anyone can get anywhere, and there's Mesa V30s and Marshall V30s. The Mesa and Marshall V30s have different magnets and/or cones to tailor the sound to their respective amps. You can generally only find those in their branded cabs though. I haven't ever seen a loose Marshall V30 floating around online or anywhere else. I have a 2x12 with regular Vintage 30s in it and though I didn't like it much at first, I'm a big fan now. With my JVM using higher gain, they're great. With the old crunchy JMP, not so much. The Greenbacks/G12-65s in my 4x12 are much better for lower gain vintagey crunch type sounds.

Man, I was right where you are, and now I have a small pile of Marshall heads, two cabs, two kick ass guitars, two mediocre guitars, and a full pedalboard.....and I'm but a lowly drummer. :laughings:

Treat yourself. Get what you really want. Do whatever you have to do to save the money and get yourself some good shit. You'll really enjoy it.

Used gear is your friend. Keep an eye out for that great deal. You'll find them.

I was just looking on ebay and they have a lot of used mesa boogie stuff around the same price as a new peavey 6505+. Not sure if they are all high gain, obviously they have a bunch of different models. I saw a few used dual rectifiers for around $1000 and slightly under. Might be worth looking into when I'm ready to fork out some cash.

Look at Guitar Center's used online section. They have tons of stuff, will ship it right to you, and there's a 30-day full money back guarantee if you don't like it for any reason. If you gotta buy used online, that's the way to go in my opinion. It's damn near risk free. It's way safer than ebay or craigslist. I've bought two amps through GC used online, and returned one even past 30 days with no problem. It's a great service IMO.

FYI - Looking now, I'm seeing tons of used 6505+s on GC used online for $700-800. Combos for less than that.

Mesa 4x12s $500-700

For $1200 or so you could be going full br00talz

Yeah on ebay you can get a mesa dual rectifier half stack for under $1500. That might be the way to go. Good thing about Ebay is they don't give the sellers their money until the buyer is 100% satisfied with the purchase. So, if they sell you screwed up crap you can get your money back. It's good and bad because it takes longer to get your money when you sell something, but people are less likely to waste their time shipping crap when they know the person will just refuse it.

I'm going to try a bunch of amps before I decide on one :D

And who said the art of writing lyrics was dead?

Anyhoos...A shot of that solo is interesting (well, to nerds like me!) Most of the energy is at 200Hz and a sharp cutoff at 8kHz tho' the whole song extends to about 17kHz.

The solo sounds a bit flat since it dips to -10-12dB below the average -3ish level.

Ah well, I just check 'em!

Dave.

I only have experience with a mesa 2x12, orange 4x12 and my crate 4x12. I've never had anyone to record with a 1960AV/BV to compare.

I found cab shape and material had a larger impact on tone. Even though the orange had v30s it sounded nothing at all like my crate, same with the mesa. They all sort of had the same thing going but it was still night and day different. My cab has no insulation inside and the orange does apparently. The mesa does as well. I never felt it was necessary, but I have had it open on a handful of occasions (once because it was wired out of phase and once to snap a pic of the speakers).

I have used my mesa DR through a regular 1960A cab and it sounded like a darker marshall 800 but pretty close. Made me think that something like 60% of what you hear from the amp is what speakers you go with.
