Hey guys.

Just to start off I will show what equipment I am using.

M-audio Fast Track

Perception 120 mic

I am a complete newbie when it comes to recording so be gentle. Previously I used garageband to record
but I heard that reaper was a lot better in terms of what you can do with it.

When recording with Garageband, my Fast Track mic input knob would be at the 3 o'clock position (Nearly full) and this would
be enough so that when I play my acoustic guitar through the mic, there would be no clipping. In reaper however I am at the 9 o'clock position (1 quarter way) and it still says it is clipping even though I can barely hear it through my headphones.

My second problem is latency, I have used midi drums for a song and when I play my acoustic over it, it is about half a second out.

I hope I have given enough information for someone to help me

Cheers!

Are you using the asio drivers for the fasttrack?

Also, you have to go into the preferences to adjust the asio audio buffers to eliminate the latency.
Reaper does not do this automatically like some apps.

I'm not familiar with the M-audio interface. But I wonder, have you not got a separate headphone volume? The recording/mic/gain volume adjustment on my interface does not affect what I hear in my headphones, they're all separate entities.

I'm not sure if it will help you, but instead of installing the drivers that came with my audio interface I installed the ASIO4All driver. It solved all the latency issues I had with my set up. BUT I'm not sure if it will be the right solution for you as I'm only a newbie myself.

Drop the trim knob on the Fast Track til you're no longer clipping.
What is this knob in Reaper where you're "at the 9 o'clock position"? You should be controlling your input gain on the Fast Track.

^^^^ This. Reaper doesn't control the input, only the output volume. It you turn Reaper volumes down, you will hear less.

I'm using wave out, when I go to ASIO it says 'asio drivers not found!' don't know what that means really.

Yeah the headphone has its own volume on the interface and its nearly full. Is ASIO4ALL free to download? It may solve the latency problem because when I put my setting to ASIO it says that the ASIO drivers could not be found.

Sorry what I said was confusing, I did mean my fast track, when I said 'in Reaper' I still meant the fast track with Reaper.

Did you install the drivers that came with the Fast track?

If you didn't, get them from . Install them and you should be able to select Asio in Reaper.

You sir, are my hero! Thanks very much, that was the problem and thanks everyone else for your help.
