Best way to mic my behemoth drum set? As you can see I have built my way out off the drum set. I live in an apartment and I have a new pain in the ass neighbor so I currently cant play :-( but I figured I could at least gets some mics set up for when I can. I have a huge drum set with everything you can image on it and I was initially going to buy and individually mic each of my 6 toms, 2 snares, and bass drum then throw a pair of overheads on top. I just wanted to make sure before I make that kind of financial investment that is indeed the best way to go? Ignore the 6" Splash Hi-Hats I took my 13.25" Hybrid Zil's off to see how those sound as Hi-Hats.

Thanks in advance for any help!

In your situation my answer would be "Roland V-Drums and EZDrummer." Probably not helpful, though...

It would definitely help us to help you if we knew what sort of music you're trying to record. I know that it's tough to remember behind that huge wall of noise, but the overall mix is all that really matters.

LOL! Mostly I play Alternative 90's rock or at least that's what Pandora calls it lol.

Thanks!

It depends on how long the crazy neighbors are there. were hoping to move into a house when our lease is up but I may do some recording in there.

Thanks!

How do you get into playing position?

Generally I figure that if you need more than 3 mics to get a good drum sound, you either need a new drummer or you'd be better off with triggers. But then, I'm the president of the Partnership for a Drum Free Amerika...

I'm thinking you'll want to kill those walls with some serious absorbtion. Cant tell how high the ceiling is, but it will probably want some coverage as well. It would not make sense to try and soundproof, but whatever you try to do mic wise is likely to be frustrated by the first reflections. Something temporary to cover that window maybe too.

I don't see a microphone whole in the front skin of that kick!

I haven't bought any mic yet lol. I plan on getting one with a hole when I mic it obviously. I cant get into playing position like I said I have a crazy neighbor and I live in an apt. I am just planning for the future lol.

Thanks!

Well one thing is for sure you won't need over heads if you mic up every drum in a live situation.

Recording will be different though.
You want a stereo field with the over heads.

What mics would you recommend with in a reasonable price?

Thanks!

Depends what you want to put into your microphone collection.

Is this gonna be just for recording?

Well then for about $200 - $300. you could start out with a nice kick, two over heads and maybe snare microphones.
How many channels does your interface/preamps have?

Does that Xenyx go into your DAW with only two channels? Am pretty sure that it does.

What is your DAW?

And how many microphone preamps are on that 4 or 6? Is that it there on the floor next to your drums?
