Promotional Companies, your thoughts?

I'd say it's a budgeting issue. You're clearly interested in getting some kind of promotion deal, but you're balking at the price point. So ask yourself a few questions about the money involved.

1. Can you afford to spend this 2 grand on a hobby? If you'd have to charge it to a credit card or eat ramen for a month, it's probably not worth it.
2. Is marketing your music the best use of that $2k? Would you get more out of trying out a promotional company (assuming that it probably won't accomplish anything) than you would from spending that money on new gear or fancy liquors or even just renting a warehouse and putting on a sweet concert/rave?
3. Are you OK with the fact that this marketing push will almost assuredly accomplish nothing?

I think ive already went with option two :)

Bought a Roland R70 this morning and will prolly buy an Access Virus this afternoon, once im drunk after the footie lol

I dont mind paying for promotion, if im willing to do the leg work to make it happen...ive bought decks and have semi prepared myself for a Live/DJ set which is the only way my stuff would work...but im not ready now, and i dont think this is the album for it..the quality in the tracks just isnt there yet for the most part

Which leaves me thinking option 3 is the obvious likelihood

I think licensing is the route im most likely to have any luck...if at all

Ive been offered a couple of gigs and I turned them down...i wouldnt know where to start tbh

What you do is prepare an hour long (or however long) mix of your tracks (and other people's if you wanna) in a single wav/MP3; turn up at the gig with an ipod; plug it in and press play; and then muck around behind the decks like you're actually doing something.

Lots of acts do this (someone called Deadmau5, whoever they are, has admitted it in interview) because people want to see them and expect them to do something live, but to hear their music in the club merely involves pressing play. The hard work has been done in the studio.

Edit - that is not to say that DJs don't mix live and there isn't an enormous skill to it.

I watched an interview with him recently.

What he described sounded like he works with stems, or a mix, but live.

So, all the midi is done, all the synths are programmed; Everything already is as it should be.

What he does (I think), is fade things in and out, and maybe do some new manipulation live. I guess he plays with filters and stuff.

I knew a guy who played his stuff out live and he'd just set his macbook up, press play and sit and surf pr0n for the entire gig.

yeah but not everyones like that (though Ive read that deadmaus interview, theres been quite a bit of backlash)

I couldnt bring myself to fake it...besides I actually like playing music, especially the little guitar parts

I think Id rather go for a mix of live synths, guitar and a little drums mixed in with a set...eventually lol

this is what can be achieved with just an MPC in the right hands

:laughings:

thats the way to do it

I knew this DJ that used to work at Londons fashion week, she was in a booth away from it all so she'd just stick on a mix CD and read a book :D

I remember watching Badly Drawn Boy at the Queens and it took him about 10 mins just to get the right beat going on a drum machine, but everybody loved it...just him, a guitar, and a drum machine...he told more jokes and stories than sang :)

though it isnt helping my headache :D

where can I get one of those suits?

btw Ive just discovered Im a really shit drummer lol

I say if you have the money to throw away then go for the promotional company. Get some references if possible before choosing. It's a gamble but you never know until you try. If it doesn't work then at least you can say you tried and you won't regret not trying.

Awesome. I like how the sticks appear to be labeled "sticks", just in case there was any doubt there...does that thing produce its own sounds, or just trigger sounds from other devices?
